1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 136
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	welcome the residents of Panola County and to recognize February
4	4	7, 2017, as Panola County Day at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Located in northeastern Texas and forming part of
6	6	the state's border with Louisiana, Panola County covers more than
7	7	800 square miles of forests and rolling plains and is traversed
8	8	by the Sabine River; the area experienced a land rush in the 1830s
9	9	as settlers arrived from the southern United States; on March 30,
10	10	1846, the Texas Legislature officially created Panola County,
11	11	and two years later, voters chose Carthage as the county
12	12	seat; and
13	13	WHEREAS, It is believed that Judge John Allison, a
14	14	prominent civic leader, suggested the name Panola, which may be
15	15	derived from the Cherokee word for cotton, ponolo; the area's
16	16	rich soil was well-suited to the crop, and cotton became the
17	17	county's main cash product; today, Panola County enjoys a
18	18	diversified economy, primarily based on oil and gas production,
19	19	agriculture, food processing, and timber; the lush forests make
20	20	the county a popular destination for hiking, birding, and camping
21	21	enthusiasts, while anglers enjoy the good fishing waters of
22	22	Martin Creek Lake and Murvaul Lake; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Home to nearly 50 Texas Historical Commission
24	24	markers, Panola County was the birthplace of several notable
25	25	Texans, including Margie Elizabeth Neal, the first woman elected
26	26	to serve in the Texas Senate, and country music stars Tex Ritter
27	27	and Jim Reeves; a museum dedicated to Mr. Ritter and a memorial
28	28	dedicated to Mr. Reeves are located in Carthage, as is the Texas
29	29	Country Music Hall of Fame, which honors the legacies of both of
30	30	these men, as well as other country music legends from the state;
31	31	the hall of fame also hosts the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame
32	32	Show and John Ritter Tribute Showcase every August; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Carthage, which was named a 2014 National Main
34	34	Street City in Texas, is also home to the historic Esquire
35	35	Theater, which plays host to the Country Music Hayride every
36	36	Saturday night; other popular events taking place in the county
37	37	seat include the Piney Woods Quilt Festival in April and the East
38	38	Texas Oil and Gas Blast in October, which features live music, a
39	39	car show, and arts and crafts; and
40	40	WHEREAS, The citizens of Panola County have long made
41	41	important contributions to the Lone Star State, and it is most
42	42	fitting that they be honored on this special day; now, therefore,
43	43	be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
45	45	Legislature, hereby recognize the residents of Panola County on
46	46	Panola County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
47	47	delegation sincere best wishes for a memorable and meaningful
48	48	visit to Austin.
