11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 138
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the citizens of Jacksonville and members of the Leadership
44 Jacksonville Institute and Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce in
55 celebrating February 28, 2017, as Leadership Jacksonville Day at
66 the State Capitol; and
77 WHEREAS, The City of Jacksonville was founded in 1847 along
88 the banks of Gum Creek, and in 1872, the city moved to its current
99 location to be closer to the railroad; in its early years, the
1010 city was a center of peach production, and later, its residents
1111 shifted their focus to tomato production; today, the city is
1212 still known as the "Tomato Capital of the World"; and
1313 WHEREAS, Over the years, Jacksonville has grown to become
1414 the largest city in Cherokee County; it boasts an economy that is
1515 based on such diverse industries as basket-making, plastic
1616 manufacturing, and health care, and it serves as a center for
1717 major retail shipping outlets; and
1818 WHEREAS, Jacksonville takes pride in its many outdoor
1919 attractions; Lake Jacksonville is noted for its beauty, and Love's
2020 Lookout Scenic Park is a destination that offers expansive and
2121 breathtaking views and has recently been revitalized with the
2222 addition of a 5,500-square-foot facility and new picnic areas; and
2323 WHEREAS, The city is known for a variety of annual
2424 community events, such as the Jacksonville Tomato Festival, the
2525 five-day Mud Nationals, and the Spooktacular Ball Bash; in
2626 addition, Tasting Jacksonville is a community favorite that
2727 brings together the talents of local restaurant chefs, caterers,
2828 and Jacksonville High School culinary students; and
2929 WHEREAS, Jacksonville is a gem among East Texas cities; its
3030 beautiful green spaces, outstanding education system, and robust
3131 economy make Jacksonville a wonderful place to live and work;
3232 residents can be justifiably proud of their success in preserving
3333 the area's stunning landscapes and in promoting a quality of life
3434 that will help the city thrive long into the future; now,
3535 therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3737 Legislature, hereby welcome the visiting delegation from
3838 Jacksonville and recognize February 28, 2017, as Leadership
3939 Jacksonville Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4141 honor of this special day.
