55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Hollis Brashear, who died at the age of
77 81; and
88 WHEREAS, Hollis Brashear was an exemplary citizen and
99 community leader whose passion for education had a profound
1010 impact on Dallas schools and students; and
1111 WHEREAS, Born in 1935, he grew up in Dallas at a time when
1212 African Americans were subject to segregation and attended
1313 underfunded schools; while a student at Lincoln High School, he
1414 was noticed for his mathematical ability, and he was encouraged
1515 to pursue a career in engineering; he went on to work his way
1616 through college by serving as a janitor and to earn his degree
1717 from Prairie View A&M University; and
1818 WHEREAS, He served the nation with distinction for 21 years
1919 as an officer in the United States Army; he was deployed to Korea
2020 and Vietnam and earned two Bronze Stars during his military
2121 career; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Brashear was elected to the Dallas
2323 Independent School District Board of Trustees in 1992 and became
2424 its president in 1997; under his direction, the board faced a
2525 number of daunting issues, including controversy around a
2626 decades-old school desegregation order, but his steady
2727 leadership and commitment to equal opportunity and excellence in
2828 education helped the board navigate through its
2929 difficulties; and
3030 WHEREAS, He was married for many years to his beloved wife,
3131 the late Minnie Brashear, and the couple was blessed with two
3232 daughters, Enez and Teresa; a devout Christian who practiced his
3333 faith in his daily life, he was an elder at Oak Cliff Bible
3434 Fellowship; and
3535 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he
3636 gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued
3737 counsel will not be forgotten; and
3838 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband and father, and he leaves
3939 behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
4040 many friends; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4242 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4343 family of Hollis Brashear; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4545 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4646 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4747 memory of Hollis Brashear.
