1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 185
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	join citizens across the state in celebrating February 22, 2017,
4	4	as Baylor Day at the Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Baylor University was established February 1,
6	6	1845, by an act of the Congress of the Republic of Texas; it is
7	7	the oldest continually operating university in the state; and
8	8	WHEREAS, This private Christian university and nationally
9	9	ranked research institution provides a vibrant campus community
10	10	to 16,959 students; it offers 142 undergraduate degrees, 75
11	11	graduate degrees, 42 doctoral degrees, and a juris doctor, in
12	12	addition to a wide array of pre-professional tracks and
13	13	specialized academic opportunities; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Baylor University is also home to a variety of
15	15	exceptional athletic programs; its football team recently won the
16	16	2016 Cactus Bowl, the men's basketball team became the number-one
17	17	team in the nation for the first time in program history, and the
18	18	women's basketball team continues its dominance continuously with
19	19	its current number-two ranking in the country; and
20	20	WHEREAS, With a 3.27 grade point average across the entire
21	21	athletic department in the fall of 2016, Baylor athletics extends
22	22	its run to 17 consecutive semesters with a cumulative grade point
23	23	average of 3.0 or higher: 137 students were named to the Dean's
24	24	List, and 307 students were named to the Big 12 Commissioner's
25	25	Honor Roll for the fall semester; and
26	26	WHEREAS, The school's combination of interdisciplinary
27	27	research and a faculty committed to teaching and scholarship has
28	28	served to create an institution with an international reputation
29	29	for educational excellence; now, therefore, be it
30	30	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
31	31	85th Legislature, hereby commend Baylor University on its
32	32	commitment to educating men and women for worldwide leadership and
33	33	service and extend to its students, faculty, and staff best wishes
34	34	for a memorable Baylor Day at the Capitol; and, be it further
35	35	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
36	36	the university as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
