11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 188
22 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to join the citizens of
33 Jefferson and Orange Counties in celebrating Golden Triangle
44 Days at the State Capitol on March 5 through 7, 2017; and
55 WHEREAS, Hundreds of visitors from throughout the culturally
66 unique region formed by the cities of Beaumont, Orange, and Port
77 Arthur have come to Austin to meet with elected officials to
88 express appreciation for their work and to inform lawmakers of
99 opportunities to further strengthen the communities that make up
1010 the Golden Triangle; and
1111 WHEREAS, Residents of Jefferson and Orange Counties have
1212 gathered for Golden Triangle Days to demonstrate their commitment
1313 to work together for the good of their region and the great State of
1414 Texas; and
1515 WHEREAS, Jefferson and Orange Counties continue to make
1616 significant strides to provide energy and chemical-manufactured
1717 products; the region is home to the Sabine Neches Waterway
1818 supporting the Ports of Beaumont, Orange, and Port Arthur making
1919 the ship channel fourth in the nation in tonnage, first as a
2020 United States crude oil importer, first in bulk liquid cargo, and
2121 first as the nation's commercial military out-load ports; the
2222 federal government, in legislation signed by the president on
2323 June 10, 2014, authorized improvements to include deepening the
2424 ship channel from 40 to 48 feet, thus making way for an improved
2525 globally competitive gateway to Texas; and
2626 WHEREAS, The region is linked to an extensive rail and
2727 pipeline system that supports communities and businesses across
2828 the country and refines a minimum of 13 percent of America's
2929 daily fuel consumption; construction has been completed on the
3030 Keystone pipeline from Oklahoma to Jefferson County, and with
3131 over $3 billion in announced new economic development projects
3232 and another $20 billion under consideration, the region accounts
3333 for a major part of the wealth for the entire state and was first
3434 in Texas in gross domestic product growth this past year; and
3535 WHEREAS, The distinctive cultural and historic
3636 contributions of this region are highlighted by numerous tourist
3737 attractions, including Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature
3838 Center, Big Thicket National Preserve, and such coastal habitats
3939 as Sea Rim State Park and the McFadden National Wildlife Refuge;
4040 they match the region's economic contributions with a strong
4141 commitment to the environment; in addition, the region is home to
4242 Lamar University, Lamar State College--Orange, Lamar State
4343 College--Port Arthur, and the Lamar Institute of Technology, as
4444 well as many other education and training assets which
4545 significantly contribute to a workforce-ready population; and
4646 WHEREAS, The people of Orange and Jefferson Counties have
4747 been building a vibrant, forward-reaching region, and it is a
4848 pleasure to acknowledge the public-spirited citizens from the
4949 Golden Triangle here today for their dedication and commitment to
5050 their communities and to our great state; now, therefore, be it
5151 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
5252 Legislature, hereby recognize March 5 through 7, 2017, as Golden
5353 Triangle Days at the State Capitol and welcome the region's
5454 visitors to Austin.
