1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 188
2	2	WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to join the citizens of
3	3	Jefferson and Orange Counties in celebrating Golden Triangle
4	4	Days at the State Capitol on March 5 through 7, 2017; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Hundreds of visitors from throughout the culturally
6	6	unique region formed by the cities of Beaumont, Orange, and Port
7	7	Arthur have come to Austin to meet with elected officials to
8	8	express appreciation for their work and to inform lawmakers of
9	9	opportunities to further strengthen the communities that make up
10	10	the Golden Triangle; and
11	11	WHEREAS, Residents of Jefferson and Orange Counties have
12	12	gathered for Golden Triangle Days to demonstrate their commitment
13	13	to work together for the good of their region and the great State of
14	14	Texas; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Jefferson and Orange Counties continue to make
16	16	significant strides to provide energy and chemical-manufactured
17	17	products; the region is home to the Sabine Neches Waterway
18	18	supporting the Ports of Beaumont, Orange, and Port Arthur making
19	19	the ship channel fourth in the nation in tonnage, first as a
20	20	United States crude oil importer, first in bulk liquid cargo, and
21	21	first as the nation's commercial military out-load ports; the
22	22	federal government, in legislation signed by the president on
23	23	June 10, 2014, authorized improvements to include deepening the
24	24	ship channel from 40 to 48 feet, thus making way for an improved
25	25	globally competitive gateway to Texas; and
26	26	WHEREAS, The region is linked to an extensive rail and
27	27	pipeline system that supports communities and businesses across
28	28	the country and refines a minimum of 13 percent of America's
29	29	daily fuel consumption; construction has been completed on the
30	30	Keystone pipeline from Oklahoma to Jefferson County, and with
31	31	over $3 billion in announced new economic development projects
32	32	and another $20 billion under consideration, the region accounts
33	33	for a major part of the wealth for the entire state and was first
34	34	in Texas in gross domestic product growth this past year; and
35	35	WHEREAS, The distinctive cultural and historic
36	36	contributions of this region are highlighted by numerous tourist
37	37	attractions, including Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature
38	38	Center, Big Thicket National Preserve, and such coastal habitats
39	39	as Sea Rim State Park and the McFadden National Wildlife Refuge;
40	40	they match the region's economic contributions with a strong
41	41	commitment to the environment; in addition, the region is home to
42	42	Lamar University, Lamar State College--Orange, Lamar State
43	43	College--Port Arthur, and the Lamar Institute of Technology, as
44	44	well as many other education and training assets which
45	45	significantly contribute to a workforce-ready population; and
46	46	WHEREAS, The people of Orange and Jefferson Counties have
47	47	been building a vibrant, forward-reaching region, and it is a
48	48	pleasure to acknowledge the public-spirited citizens from the
49	49	Golden Triangle here today for their dedication and commitment to
50	50	their communities and to our great state; now, therefore, be it
51	51	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
52	52	Legislature, hereby recognize March 5 through 7, 2017, as Golden
53	53	Triangle Days at the State Capitol and welcome the region's
54	54	visitors to Austin.
