2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Bee County are gathering at the |

3 | 3 | | State Capitol to celebrate Bee County Day on February 14, 2017; and |

4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, Artifacts indicate that the Bee County region was |
---|
5 | 5 | | originally inhabited 6,000 to 10,000 years ago; the first |
---|
6 | 6 | | permanent European settlers arrived in the early 19th century, |
---|
7 | 7 | | and 11 area landowners were among the signers of the Texas |
---|
8 | 8 | | Declaration of Independence; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Bee County was officially organized on January |
---|
10 | 10 | | 25, 1858, and was named for Barnard E. Bee Sr., a South Carolina |
---|
11 | 11 | | attorney, soldier, and statesman who joined the army of the |
---|
12 | 12 | | Republic of Texas and later served as secretary of war under Sam |
---|
13 | 13 | | Houston; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Located in the South Texas Plains vegetation |
---|
15 | 15 | | region, the county covers 866 square miles that slope gently |
---|
16 | 16 | | toward the Gulf Coast; with the region's open expanses of |
---|
17 | 17 | | grasslands, its economy is dominated by farming and ranching, |
---|
18 | 18 | | along with oil and gas operations and agribusiness; Beeville is |
---|
19 | 19 | | the county seat, and other towns in the county include Skidmore, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Blue Berry Hill, Pettus, Tuleta, Tynan, Pawnee, Normanna, and |
---|
21 | 21 | | Mineral; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Bee County is blessed with an array of cultural |

23 | 23 | | and historical attractions for residents and visitors to |
---|
24 | 24 | | explore; Beeville has successfully revitalized its downtown |
---|
25 | 25 | | district and has been named a Texas Main Street City by the Texas |
---|
26 | 26 | | Historical Commission; Coastal Bend College--Beeville offers |
---|
27 | 27 | | occupational and academic classes for its students, and it has |
---|
28 | 28 | | the oldest academic educational glassblowing facility in the |
---|
29 | 29 | | state; art enthusiasts may delight in the exhibits of the |
---|
30 | 30 | | Beeville Art Museum, which is funded by the Joe Barnhart |
---|
31 | 31 | | Foundation and housed in the historic Esther Barnhart House; in |
---|
32 | 32 | | addition, visitors gather from all across Texas to celebrate the |
---|
33 | 33 | | state's rich traditions at Western Week, one of the county's |
---|
34 | 34 | | largest and longest-running festivals; and |

35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Bee County may indeed take great |

36 | 36 | | pride in their vibrant heritage as they work together to build an |

37 | 37 | | even brighter future, and this special day provides a welcome |

38 | 38 | | opportunity to pay tribute to the county and its people; now, |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |

41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 14, 2017, as Bee County |
