1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 193
2	2	WHEREAS, Aggies and Longhorns will unite today at the State
3	3	Capitol to celebrate Orange and Maroon Legislative Day 2017 and
4	4	to promote higher education in the State of Texas; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Alumni from the two universities total more than
6	6	941,000, and Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at
7	7	Austin have a combined annual enrollment of more than 117,000
8	8	students and award more than 27,000 degrees each year; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The schools each boast excellent museums and
10	10	libraries, including the George Bush Presidential Library and
11	11	Museum in College Station and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library
12	12	and Museum in Austin, and both universities offer competitive
13	13	tuition rates in order to remain accessible and affordable; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
15	15	at Austin are renowned for their exceptional research, and the
16	16	teaching and research missions of the institutions benefit the
17	17	State of Texas by advancing scientific breakthroughs, improving
18	18	health care, making technological innovations, and creating
19	19	successive generations of informed and engaged citizens; and
20	20	WHEREAS, Researchers at Texas A&M University and The
21	21	University of Texas at Austin explore, discover, and innovate in
22	22	the sciences, arts, and humanities; together, the universities
23	23	have more than 1,500 patents and more than $1.3 billion in total
24	24	research expenditures; the universities drive economic prosperity
25	25	in their respective regions and in the State of Texas through the
26	26	generation of patents, grants, corporate start-ups, and numerous
27	27	other enterprises; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Both universities serve as centers for the arts
29	29	and culture, inspiring Texans to take part in the visual and
30	30	performing arts and other creative endeavors; the institutions
31	31	also serve as flagships for athletics and physical education,
32	32	encouraging Texans to participate in physical activity and to
33	33	support the student-athletes that represent the state in
34	34	competition across the nation; and
35	35	WHEREAS, The universities' faculties feature Nobel laureates
36	36	and nationally recognized scholars, and the student bodies
37	37	include National Merit scholars, Rhodes scholars, Olympic gold
38	38	medalists, and many of the Lone Star State's most promising young
39	39	people; in addition, the universities offer an amazing range of
40	40	postgraduate opportunities, with nearly 500 graduate degree
41	41	programs; and
42	42	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
43	43	at Austin are the only two tier-one public research institutions
44	44	in the State of Texas as defined by the Texas Higher Education
45	45	Coordinating Board; these flagship universities are members of
46	46	the prestigious Association of American Universities; and
47	47	WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
48	48	at Austin have established themselves as preeminent institutions
49	49	of higher education on the state, national, and international
50	50	levels, and Texans are fortunate to have access to these two
51	51	exceptional state university systems; now, therefore, be it
52	52	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
53	53	Legislature, hereby recognize February 15, 2017, as Orange and
54	54	Maroon Legislative Day and commend alumni from Texas A&M
55	55	University and The University of Texas at Austin for their
56	56	commitment to promoting higher education in the Lone Star State;
57	57	and, be it further
58	58	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor
59	59	of this special occasion.
