11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 193
22 WHEREAS, Aggies and Longhorns will unite today at the State
33 Capitol to celebrate Orange and Maroon Legislative Day 2017 and
44 to promote higher education in the State of Texas; and
55 WHEREAS, Alumni from the two universities total more than
66 941,000, and Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at
77 Austin have a combined annual enrollment of more than 117,000
88 students and award more than 27,000 degrees each year; and
99 WHEREAS, The schools each boast excellent museums and
1010 libraries, including the George Bush Presidential Library and
1111 Museum in College Station and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library
1212 and Museum in Austin, and both universities offer competitive
1313 tuition rates in order to remain accessible and affordable; and
1414 WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
1515 at Austin are renowned for their exceptional research, and the
1616 teaching and research missions of the institutions benefit the
1717 State of Texas by advancing scientific breakthroughs, improving
1818 health care, making technological innovations, and creating
1919 successive generations of informed and engaged citizens; and
2020 WHEREAS, Researchers at Texas A&M University and The
2121 University of Texas at Austin explore, discover, and innovate in
2222 the sciences, arts, and humanities; together, the universities
2323 have more than 1,500 patents and more than $1.3 billion in total
2424 research expenditures; the universities drive economic prosperity
2525 in their respective regions and in the State of Texas through the
2626 generation of patents, grants, corporate start-ups, and numerous
2727 other enterprises; and
2828 WHEREAS, Both universities serve as centers for the arts
2929 and culture, inspiring Texans to take part in the visual and
3030 performing arts and other creative endeavors; the institutions
3131 also serve as flagships for athletics and physical education,
3232 encouraging Texans to participate in physical activity and to
3333 support the student-athletes that represent the state in
3434 competition across the nation; and
3535 WHEREAS, The universities' faculties feature Nobel laureates
3636 and nationally recognized scholars, and the student bodies
3737 include National Merit scholars, Rhodes scholars, Olympic gold
3838 medalists, and many of the Lone Star State's most promising young
3939 people; in addition, the universities offer an amazing range of
4040 postgraduate opportunities, with nearly 500 graduate degree
4141 programs; and
4242 WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
4343 at Austin are the only two tier-one public research institutions
4444 in the State of Texas as defined by the Texas Higher Education
4545 Coordinating Board; these flagship universities are members of
4646 the prestigious Association of American Universities; and
4747 WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and The University of Texas
4848 at Austin have established themselves as preeminent institutions
4949 of higher education on the state, national, and international
5050 levels, and Texans are fortunate to have access to these two
5151 exceptional state university systems; now, therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
5353 Legislature, hereby recognize February 15, 2017, as Orange and
5454 Maroon Legislative Day and commend alumni from Texas A&M
5555 University and The University of Texas at Austin for their
5656 commitment to promoting higher education in the Lone Star State;
5757 and, be it further
5858 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor
5959 of this special occasion.
