1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 194
2	2	WHEREAS, Residents of San Patricio County are gathering in
3	3	Austin on February 15, 2017, to celebrate San Patricio County Day
4	4	at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Situated on the broad coastal plain along the Gulf
6	6	of Mexico, this region was originally inhabited by the Karankawa
7	7	Indians; less than 30 years after Columbus came to America, a
8	8	European explorer sailed into the bay behind Aransas Pass, and
9	9	over the next 200 years, the territory was visited by Spanish and
10	10	French explorers and Mexican sheepherders; and
11	11	WHEREAS, In 1829, 200 Irish families from New York formed a
12	12	colony under a contract with the government of Mexico and founded
13	13	the town of San Patricio de Hibernia, named after Saint Patrick,
14	14	the patron saint of Ireland; the town was the site of a battle
15	15	during the Texas Revolution in 1836, and later that same year,
16	16	San Patricio County was created by the new Republic of Texas; and
17	17	WHEREAS, By 1860, San Patricio County was occupied by
18	18	ranchers and farmers, and during the Civil War, a Confederate
19	19	fort was built at Aransas Pass to deal with smugglers, rustlers,
20	20	and Federal raiders; the county's economy was boosted in 1885
21	21	when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway was extended to
22	22	Aransas Harbor; the town of Sinton, named after an Ohio banker
23	23	who had invested in the area's development, was designated as the
24	24	county seat in 1893; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Oil and gas were discovered in the county in the
26	26	early 20th century, and the petroleum industry and agriculture
27	27	continue to be the foundation of the economy; cotton, sorghum,
28	28	and cattle are all major products, along with shrimp from the
29	29	commercial fisheries along the coast; the deepwater port at
30	30	Aransas Pass is easily accessible to northern markets by rail,
31	31	highway, and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Today, the people of San Patricio County enjoy a
33	33	relaxed rural lifestyle while taking advantage of their
34	34	proximity to the urban amenities of Corpus Christi; hunters,
35	35	birders, kayakers, snorkelers, and devotees of sport fishing
36	36	travel to the county for its many opportunities for recreation;
37	37	the county is also home to the Welder Wildlife Refuge, one of the
38	38	largest privately endowed refuges in the world; and
39	39	WHEREAS, Celebrating their colorful past even as they work
40	40	to build a bright future, those Texans who call San Patricio
41	41	County home may indeed take great pride in the important role
42	42	their unique region plays in the story of the Lone Star State;
43	43	now, therefore, be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
45	45	Legislature, hereby recognize February 15, 2017, as San Patricio
46	46	County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
47	47	delegation sincere best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin.
