2	2	WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Renal Coalition and the
3	3	Kidney Alliance of Texas are visiting Austin on
4	4	February 14, 2017, to participate in Rita L. Littlefield Kidney
5	5	Day at the State Capitol; and
6	6	WHEREAS, This biennial event was established in 1997 by
7	7	Rita Littlefield, a founding member of the Texas Renal Coalition
8	8	and the Kidney Alliance of Texas, who has worked tirelessly for
9	9	more than three decades in behalf of kidney patients; the
10	10	gathering unites patients, health care providers, and others in
11	11	the drive to raise awareness of a significant medical issue; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Across the nation, an estimated 30 million people
13	13	suffer from kidney disease, and more than 600,000 are undergoing
14	14	lifesaving dialysis or have had a kidney transplant; in Texas, 17
15	15	percent of the adult population has kidney disease, and the
16	16	number of dialysis patients has tripled since 1990; and
17	17	WHEREAS, Although kidney disease is a serious and rapidly
18	18	growing health problem, many Texans remain unaware that they are
19	19	at risk; left undetected, chronic kidney disease can lead to
20	20	premature death from heart disease or other complications, or to
21	21	kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a transplant to sustain
22	22	life; early detection and management can prevent or slow the
23	23	progression of chronic kidney disease and decrease health care
24	24	expenditures associated with the treatment of advanced kidney
25	25	disease; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Many medical professionals, organizations, and
27	27	volunteers in the state are committed to ensuring the highest
28	28	quality of care for kidney patients; the Texas Renal Coalition
29	29	contributes significantly to this mission as it monitors health
30	30	policies for dialysis and transplant patients, offers education
31	31	programs to improve public awareness about the disease, and acts as
32	32	a clearinghouse for information related to legislative issues; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Benefiting from the dedication and leadership of
34	34	Rita Littlefield, the Texas Renal Coalition, the Kidney Alliance
35	35	of Texas, and their associates have made a positive difference in
36	36	the lives of innumerable Texans, and it is most fitting to
37	37	recognize Rita Littlefield and these organizations for their
38	38	achievements; now, therefore, be it
39	39	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
40	40	Legislature, hereby recognize February 14, 2017, as Rita L.
41	41	Littlefield Kidney Day at the State Capitol and extend to all
42	42	those participating sincere best wishes for a productive and
43	43	memorable event.
