11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 195
22 WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Renal Coalition and the
33 Kidney Alliance of Texas are visiting Austin on
44 February 14, 2017, to participate in Rita L. Littlefield Kidney
55 Day at the State Capitol; and
66 WHEREAS, This biennial event was established in 1997 by
77 Rita Littlefield, a founding member of the Texas Renal Coalition
88 and the Kidney Alliance of Texas, who has worked tirelessly for
99 more than three decades in behalf of kidney patients; the
1010 gathering unites patients, health care providers, and others in
1111 the drive to raise awareness of a significant medical issue; and
1212 WHEREAS, Across the nation, an estimated 30 million people
1313 suffer from kidney disease, and more than 600,000 are undergoing
1414 lifesaving dialysis or have had a kidney transplant; in Texas, 17
1515 percent of the adult population has kidney disease, and the
1616 number of dialysis patients has tripled since 1990; and
1717 WHEREAS, Although kidney disease is a serious and rapidly
1818 growing health problem, many Texans remain unaware that they are
1919 at risk; left undetected, chronic kidney disease can lead to
2020 premature death from heart disease or other complications, or to
2121 kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a transplant to sustain
2222 life; early detection and management can prevent or slow the
2323 progression of chronic kidney disease and decrease health care
2424 expenditures associated with the treatment of advanced kidney
2525 disease; and
2626 WHEREAS, Many medical professionals, organizations, and
2727 volunteers in the state are committed to ensuring the highest
2828 quality of care for kidney patients; the Texas Renal Coalition
2929 contributes significantly to this mission as it monitors health
3030 policies for dialysis and transplant patients, offers education
3131 programs to improve public awareness about the disease, and acts as
3232 a clearinghouse for information related to legislative issues; and
3333 WHEREAS, Benefiting from the dedication and leadership of
3434 Rita Littlefield, the Texas Renal Coalition, the Kidney Alliance
3535 of Texas, and their associates have made a positive difference in
3636 the lives of innumerable Texans, and it is most fitting to
3737 recognize Rita Littlefield and these organizations for their
3838 achievements; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4040 Legislature, hereby recognize February 14, 2017, as Rita L.
4141 Littlefield Kidney Day at the State Capitol and extend to all
4242 those participating sincere best wishes for a productive and
4343 memorable event.
