| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Texas Southern University and to welcome those who are |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | visiting the State Capitol on January 24, 2017, to celebrate |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Texas Southern University Day; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1927, Texas Southern University is one |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | of the most prominent Historically Black Colleges and Universities |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | in Texas and in the United States; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The university offers more than 120 baccalaureate, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | master's, and doctoral degree programs in nine schools and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | colleges, and it provides a first-class education to approximately |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | 8,500 students each year; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, One-fourth of all African American pharmacists in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the country are graduates of Texas Southern University, and the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Thurgood Marshall School of Law annually graduates more African |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | American and Hispanic law students than any other law school in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the state; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Under the direction of Dr. Austin A. Lane, the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | university is committed to focusing on student success and to |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | maintaining the highest standards in academic quality and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | research, fiscal responsibility, and educational partnerships; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Texas Southern University is proud to have two |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | members of the Texas Senate and eleven members of the Texas House |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of Representatives closely tied to the university as alumni or |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | current students; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Texas Southern University is an enduring and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | invaluable force in the provision of quality higher education, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and the institution plays a significant role in the economic and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | social vitality of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby commend Texas Southern University on its |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | dedication to excellence and extend to its delegates best wishes |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | for a memorable Texas Southern University Day at the State |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Capitol; and, be it further |
