SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 207 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pleasure in recognizing First Lady Cecilia Abbott, the first Hispanic first lady of Texas, for her outstanding service on behalf of the citizens of the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, The granddaughter of Mexican immigrants, Cecilia Abbott was raised in San Antonio by parents who were educators and who instilled in their children a love of learning and a commitment to helping others; and WHEREAS, Motivated by her love of knowledge, she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and master's degrees in both education and theology from the University of Saint Thomas in Houston; she began her career as a teacher, and over the years, she served as an instructor and administrator at several Catholic schools across the state; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Abbott retired from the field of education in 2001 to pursue new avenues in civic service, and she accepted the role of managing director of community relations for a company that specializes in senior health care facilities and services; she was appointed to the State Board for Educator Certification by former Governor Rick Perry, and she served the board with distinction for seven years; and WHEREAS, In addition to dedicating her professional life to public service, Cecilia Abbott has volunteered her time in leadership roles for numerous civic, educational, and philanthropic organizations; she is an example to young women throughout the state, and Texans everywhere are indeed honored to call her first lady; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend First Lady of Texas Cecilia Abbott for her devotion to the citizens of Texas and for her many contributions to the state and extend to her best wishes in all her endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
