2	2	WHEREAS, On February 16, 2017, members of the Nacogdoches
3	3	County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Nacogdoches, and Stephen
4	4	F. Austin State University and its Student Government and Alumni
5	5	Associations are visiting Austin to celebrate Nacogdoches-SFA
6	6	Day at the State Capitol; and
7	7	WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is the site of a Caddo Native American
8	8	settlement and a Spanish mission established in 1716; founded by
9	9	Antonio Gil Y'Barbo, it received designation from Spain as a
10	10	pueblo in 1779, and today it proudly calls itself the first town
11	11	in Texas; and
12	12	WHEREAS, The city became an important gateway for trade
13	13	with the French, and it claims among its lengthy list of Texas
14	14	milestones being home to the first English-language newspaper,
15	15	oil well, and two-story building, as well as the state's
16	16	inaugural district court session; the nine flags flown over the
17	17	city include those of three short-lived early republics; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Today, the vintage charm of Nacogdoches brings
19	19	many tourists who explore such attractions as the Old Stone Fort,
20	20	the Victorian homes along Mound Street, the 19th-century
21	21	buildings of Millard's Crossing, and the quaint antique shops and
22	22	restaurants along the brick downtown streets; many also come to
23	23	enjoy the state-sanctioned Texas Blueberry Festival, which
24	24	celebrates the importance of the Texas blueberry industry, and to
25	25	participate in recreational activities at Lake Nacogdoches, Lake
26	26	Naconiche, and Sam Rayburn Reservoir, all known for their bass
27	27	fishing; in addition to tourism, the primary industries of the
28	28	area include agricultural services, manufacturing, and oil and
29	29	gas, and the construction and completion of the Interstate 69
30	30	system is critical to continuing development in Nacogdoches
31	31	County; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Education has been an important part of the area's
33	33	economy since Stephen F. Austin State University opened its doors
34	34	to 158 students on September 18, 1923; its alumni association was
35	35	organized just five years later and has worked diligently through
36	36	the years to support the school, which now has an enrollment of
37	37	approximately 13,000 students; the university boasts an
38	38	exceptionally scenic campus recognized for the SFA Gardens and
39	39	also operates a beef and poultry farm, a dairy farm, an
40	40	experimental forest, a forestry field station, and the Waters of
41	41	East Texas Center; its observatory is the second largest, not
42	42	only in Texas but also in the Central Time Zone, and on November
43	43	7, 2016, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Ed and Gwen
44	44	Cole STEM Building, which will provide new educational
45	45	opportunities for all Texans; and
46	46	WHEREAS, Beautifully situated in the Texas Forest Country,
47	47	Nacogdoches is attracting active retired Texans; it was one of
48	48	the first three communities in Texas recognized as a Go Texan
49	49	certified retirement community because of its cultural and
50	50	sporting events, health care, safety, and continuing education
51	51	opportunities; additionally, the city has been designated the
52	52	official Garden Capital of Texas; and
53	53	WHEREAS, The combination of numerous amenities and a
54	54	neighborly atmosphere makes Nacogdoches a splendid place to
55	55	live, work, and study, and it is a pleasure to welcome those
56	56	representing the many facets of this vibrant part of the Lone
57	57	Star State; now, therefore, be it
58	58	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
59	59	Legislature, hereby recognize February 16, 2017, as
60	60	Nacogdoches-SFA Day at the State Capitol and extend to the
61	61	visiting delegation best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin.
