4	4	Paul W. Powell
5	5	WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed spiritual leader drew to a
6	6	close with the passing of the Reverend Paul W. Powell on December
7	7	28, 2016, at the age of 83; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Paul Powell was born on December 6, 1933, and grew
9	9	up in East Texas; called to the ministry at the age of 17, he
10	10	earned degrees from Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist
11	11	Theological Seminary and went on to preach at churches in
12	12	Belfalls, Troy, Taylor, and San Marcos; in 1972, he assumed the
13	13	pulpit at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, where he guided
14	14	the congregation for nearly two decades; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Over the years, Reverend Powell held a number of
16	16	offices with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, including a
17	17	term as president from 1985 to 1987, and he also served as
18	18	president and chief executive officer of the Southern Baptist
19	19	Convention Annuity Board; he subsequently accepted a position as
20	20	dean of the George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor
21	21	University, which more than doubled its enrollment and saw its
22	22	endowment grow to more than $38 million during his six-year
23	23	tenure; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Reverend Powell's many achievements and contributions
25	25	were recognized with Distinguished Alumnus accolades from Baylor
26	26	University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and
27	27	with honorary degrees from Baylor, East Texas Baptist University,
28	28	Campbell University, Dallas Baptist University, and the University
29	29	of Mary Hardin-Baylor; he also received Baylor's Herbert H.
30	30	Reynolds Award; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Additionally, Reverend Powell authored 36 books,
32	32	and he gave generously of his time and talents to the boards of
33	33	Southside Bank, the Robert M. Rogers Foundation, and Mother
34	34	Frances Hospital in Tyler; he also enjoyed playing softball and
35	35	basketball on church teams; and
36	36	WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and
37	37	support of his wife, Cathy, and he took tremendous pride in their
38	38	three children, Kent, Mike, and Lori, and their grandchildren,
39	39	Jordan, Katie, and Matthew; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Paul Powell truly exemplified the highest standards
41	41	of his vocation, and he leaves behind a legacy of good works that
42	42	will long be remembered; now, therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
44	44	Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Reverend
45	45	Paul W. Powell and extend sincere condolences to his family and
46	46	friends; and, be it further
47	47	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
48	48	his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
49	49	so in memory of the Reverend Paul W. Powell.
