55 WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed spiritual leader drew to a
66 close with the passing of the Reverend Paul W. Powell on December
77 28, 2016, at the age of 83; and
88 WHEREAS, Paul Powell was born on December 6, 1933, and grew
99 up in East Texas; called to the ministry at the age of 17, he
1010 earned degrees from Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist
1111 Theological Seminary and went on to preach at churches in
1212 Belfalls, Troy, Taylor, and San Marcos; in 1972, he assumed the
1313 pulpit at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, where he guided
1414 the congregation for nearly two decades; and
1515 WHEREAS, Over the years, Reverend Powell held a number of
1616 offices with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, including a
1717 term as president from 1985 to 1987, and he also served as
1818 president and chief executive officer of the Southern Baptist
1919 Convention Annuity Board; he subsequently accepted a position as
2020 dean of the George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor
2121 University, which more than doubled its enrollment and saw its
2222 endowment grow to more than $38 million during his six-year
2323 tenure; and
2424 WHEREAS, Reverend Powell's many achievements and contributions
2525 were recognized with Distinguished Alumnus accolades from Baylor
2626 University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and
2727 with honorary degrees from Baylor, East Texas Baptist University,
2828 Campbell University, Dallas Baptist University, and the University
2929 of Mary Hardin-Baylor; he also received Baylor's Herbert H.
3030 Reynolds Award; and
3131 WHEREAS, Additionally, Reverend Powell authored 36 books,
3232 and he gave generously of his time and talents to the boards of
3333 Southside Bank, the Robert M. Rogers Foundation, and Mother
3434 Frances Hospital in Tyler; he also enjoyed playing softball and
3535 basketball on church teams; and
3636 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and
3737 support of his wife, Cathy, and he took tremendous pride in their
3838 three children, Kent, Mike, and Lori, and their grandchildren,
3939 Jordan, Katie, and Matthew; and
4040 WHEREAS, Paul Powell truly exemplified the highest standards
4141 of his vocation, and he leaves behind a legacy of good works that
4242 will long be remembered; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4444 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Reverend
4545 Paul W. Powell and extend sincere condolences to his family and
4646 friends; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4848 his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
4949 so in memory of the Reverend Paul W. Powell.
