4	4	Hamp Atkinson
5	5	WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
6	6	memories of former state representative Hamp Atkinson of New
7	7	Boston, who died on July 5, 2016, at the age of 82; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Hamp Atkinson was born to Ballard and Sybil
9	9	Atkinson on December 23, 1933, in the Old Salem community near
10	10	New Boston; over the course of his working life, he owned a ranch,
11	11	a farm supply store, and a petroleum business, and he served as a
12	12	director of the Guaranty Bond Bank; he was a longtime member of
13	13	Tapp United Methodist Church in New Boston; and
14	14	WHEREAS, This distinguished Texan was also one of the
15	15	leading educators in Bowie County for many years, and he carried
16	16	his passionate advocacy for education with him into the Texas
17	17	Legislature, where he represented House District 1 from 1975 to
18	18	1983; a member of the Public Education Committee throughout his
19	19	tenure, he chaired that body during his last two terms and also
20	20	sat on a number of public education subcommittees, including
21	21	those on public school finance, the Teacher Retirement System,
22	22	and budget and oversight; in addition, he served as vice chair of
23	23	the Ways and Means Committee, and throughout the entirety of his
24	24	legislative career, he held a seat on the State Preservation
25	25	Board; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Mr. Atkinson was a loving husband to Sue Farris
27	27	Atkinson, and he delighted in the time he spent with his family,
28	28	which included his daughters, Amy Barron and her husband, Bryan,
29	29	and Melinda Black and her husband, Scott, as well as his
30	30	stepchildren, Lee Farris and his wife, Melissa, Julie Cherry and
31	31	her husband, Jim, and Jennifer Newton and her husband, Nick;
32	32	later in life, he was blessed with nine grandchildren and their
33	33	spouses, Magan and Clayton Wisdom, Paige and Matt Kiddey, Sara
34	34	McCarter, Molly Black, Brooks Black, Brody Barron, Lee William
35	35	Farris, Meredith Farris, and Harrison Newton, and a
36	36	great-grandson, Lane Wisdom; his first wife, Pat Atkinson, and
37	37	two daughters, Lisa Lyn Atkinson and Lori McCarter, preceded him
38	38	in death; and
39	39	WHEREAS, A devoted family man and a dedicated public
40	40	servant, Hamp Atkinson will be deeply missed, but he leaves
41	41	behind a record of civic engagement that will continue to inspire
42	42	all those who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
44	44	Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Hamp
45	45	Atkinson and extend sincere condolences to his family and
46	46	friends; and, be it further
47	47	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
48	48	his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
49	49	so in memory of Hamp Atkinson.
