| 5 | 5 | | December 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington; and |

| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Under the direction of head coach Scott Surratt, |

| 7 | 7 | | the Bulldogs marched through the postseason with triumphs over |

| 8 | 8 | | Silsbee, Houston North Forest, Henderson, Stafford, and China |

| 9 | 9 | | Spring High Schools, setting the stage for a showdown with Wylie |

| 10 | 10 | | High School of Abilene in the title game; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Rallying from an early 14-point deficit, the |

| 12 | 12 | | Bulldogs notched two touchdowns and a field goal against Wylie to |

| 13 | 13 | | close out the first half tied at 17; though both teams were held |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | scoreless in the third quarter, Carthage launched a devastating |

| 15 | 15 | | ground assault in the final frame, tallying two rushing |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | touchdowns to win by a score of 31-17; with the victory, Carthage |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | clinched its fifth state title in the past nine years, and Coach |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Surratt earned the distinction of becoming one of only four Texas |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | high school football coaches with five or more championship |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | trophies; and |

| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The Bulldogs offense was led by junior running |

| 22 | 22 | | back Keaontay Ingram, who rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns |

| 23 | 23 | | on his way to being named the Offensive Most Valuable Player; |

| 24 | 24 | | pacing the defense was senior defensive tackle Austin Russell, |

| 25 | 25 | | who recovered two fumbles to earn the Defensive Most Valuable |

| 26 | 26 | | Player award; en route to the state crown, Carthage also received |

| 27 | 27 | | valuable contributions from the other members of the roster; and |

| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Through their superior caliber of play in 2016, |

| 29 | 29 | | the Carthage Bulldogs have furthered their reputation as one of |

| 30 | 30 | | the elite teams in Texas high school football, and they may take |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | justifiable pride in their accomplishments; now, therefore, |

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |

| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate the Carthage High School |

| 35 | 35 | | football team on winning the 2016 University Interscholastic |

| 36 | 36 | | League Class 4A Division 1 state championship and extend to all |

| 37 | 37 | | those associated with the squad sincere best wishes for continued |
