2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | join the Montgomery County Historical Commission in celebrating |
---|
4 | 4 | | the dedication of an Official Texas Historical Marker for the |
---|
5 | 5 | | Lake Creek Settlement; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Lake Creek Settlement was established in 1831 |
---|
7 | 7 | | as part of Stephen F. Austin's Second Colony; located between the |
---|
8 | 8 | | west fork of the San Jacinto River and the stream known as Lake |
---|
9 | 9 | | Creek, it was the first Anglo American settlement in what is |
---|
10 | 10 | | today Montgomery County; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1835, William W. Shepperd, a colonist from |
---|
12 | 12 | | North Carolina, established a store that quickly became a |
---|
13 | 13 | | community center in the growing settlement; at the site of his |
---|
14 | 14 | | store, he later founded the town of Montgomery, which became the |
---|
15 | 15 | | county seat shortly after President Sam Houston signed the act |
---|
16 | 16 | | that created Montgomery County; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Men from the Lake Creek Settlement fought in many |
---|
18 | 18 | | of the pivotal engagements of the Texas Revolution, including the |
---|
19 | 19 | | Battle of Concepción, the Siege of Béxar, the Grass Fight, and |
---|
20 | 20 | | the Battle of San Jacinto; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, As the town of Montgomery grew and thrived, the |
---|
22 | 22 | | term Lake Creek Settlement was used less frequently to describe |
---|
23 | 23 | | the area, and the settlement was largely forgotten; it was |
---|
24 | 24 | | rediscovered in recent decades by historians who researched |
---|
25 | 25 | | documents in the county courthouse; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The Lake Creek Settlement holds great historical |
---|
27 | 27 | | significance as one of the earliest Anglo American settlements in |
---|
28 | 28 | | Texas, and it is truly fitting that an Official Texas Historical |
---|
29 | 29 | | Marker be erected to commemorate its importance; now, therefore, |
---|
30 | 30 | | be it |
---|
31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Montgomery County Historical |
---|
33 | 33 | | Commission and the people of Montgomery County on their |
---|
34 | 34 | | commitment to preserving their colorful past and extend to them |
---|
35 | 35 | | best wishes for a memorable dedication ceremony for the Lake |
---|
36 | 36 | | Creek Settlement Official Texas Historical Marker; and, be |
