5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of the Reverend Charles |
---|
7 | 7 | | William Mays Jr.; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Charles Mays Jr. was born on September 8, 1947, in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Taylor; he was baptized as a young boy at the Sweet Home Baptist |
---|
10 | 10 | | Church in Round Rock; he began a life of Christian devotion by |
---|
11 | 11 | | serving as a junior deacon at the church, and he later became a |
---|
12 | 12 | | deacon at the age of 19; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Charles married Nancy Sterling on March 12, 1965, |
---|
14 | 14 | | and they were blessed with three children; he and his family |
---|
15 | 15 | | joined the congregation of Mount Zion Baptist Church, and he and |
---|
16 | 16 | | his wife codirected the youth ministry at the church for more |
---|
17 | 17 | | than two decades; Pastor Mays was ordained in 1994, and he |
---|
18 | 18 | | continued to serve Mount Zion Baptist Church as an associate |
---|
19 | 19 | | minister for several years; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, In June of 2000, Pastor Mays followed the call to |
---|
21 | 21 | | lead the congregation of the Rising Star Missionary Baptist |
---|
22 | 22 | | Church; he was a faithful leader who preached with conviction, |
---|
23 | 23 | | and he was known for making Sunday mornings a time of joyous |
---|
24 | 24 | | celebration; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Pastor Mays was a devoted husband, father, and |
---|
26 | 26 | | grandfather who was beloved throughout the community for his |
---|
27 | 27 | | kindness, his wise counsel, and his inspiring spiritual leadership; |
---|
28 | 28 | | he will long be remembered with respect and admiration by all who |
---|
29 | 29 | | were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
32 | 32 | | family of the Reverend Charles William Mays Jr.; and, be it further |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
34 | 34 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
