44 Charles William Mays Jr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of the Reverend Charles
77 William Mays Jr.; and
88 WHEREAS, Charles Mays Jr. was born on September 8, 1947, in
99 Taylor; he was baptized as a young boy at the Sweet Home Baptist
1010 Church in Round Rock; he began a life of Christian devotion by
1111 serving as a junior deacon at the church, and he later became a
1212 deacon at the age of 19; and
1313 WHEREAS, Charles married Nancy Sterling on March 12, 1965,
1414 and they were blessed with three children; he and his family
1515 joined the congregation of Mount Zion Baptist Church, and he and
1616 his wife codirected the youth ministry at the church for more
1717 than two decades; Pastor Mays was ordained in 1994, and he
1818 continued to serve Mount Zion Baptist Church as an associate
1919 minister for several years; and
2020 WHEREAS, In June of 2000, Pastor Mays followed the call to
2121 lead the congregation of the Rising Star Missionary Baptist
2222 Church; he was a faithful leader who preached with conviction,
2323 and he was known for making Sunday mornings a time of joyous
2424 celebration; and
2525 WHEREAS, Pastor Mays was a devoted husband, father, and
2626 grandfather who was beloved throughout the community for his
2727 kindness, his wise counsel, and his inspiring spiritual leadership;
2828 he will long be remembered with respect and admiration by all who
2929 were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3131 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3232 family of the Reverend Charles William Mays Jr.; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3434 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3535 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3636 memory of Charles William Mays Jr.
