11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 232
22 WHEREAS, During the years 1917 to 1919, Texas and Texans
33 played a prominent role in all aspects of the United States'
44 involvement in the Great War; and
55 WHEREAS, Of the approximately 200,000 Texans who served in
66 the military, on land, at sea, and in the air, 5,171 made the
77 ultimate sacrifice for their country during World War I; and
88 WHEREAS, Texans served in the Army, Navy, and Marines, and
99 Texas soldiers formed the Army's 36th and 90th Infantry
1010 Divisions; the state became a primary training location for
1111 numerous National Guard divisions mobilized from other states;
1212 Texas was also an early leader in military aviation, with more
1313 than a dozen Army aviation training and logistics bases
1414 established in the state; and
1515 WHEREAS, Texans made noteworthy individual heroic
1616 contributions during their military service, and the state
1717 produced numerous Medal of Honor recipients, French Croix de
1818 Guerre recipients, and aviation aces; after World War I, many
1919 Texas veterans went on to make significant contributions in
2020 government, industry, the arts, and the military; and
2121 WHEREAS, The people of Texas provided essential support to
2222 the war effort by producing needed materials, purchasing war
2323 bonds and stamps, participating in food conservation programs,
2424 and volunteering in civic organizations, such as the Red Cross,
2525 the YMCA, the Jewish Welfare Board, and the Salvation Army; Texas
2626 industry and agriculture provided livestock, oil, cotton, lumber,
2727 shipbuilding, and manufacturing in support of the war effort; and
2828 WHEREAS, Texas cities, towns, and counties supported
2929 numerous military training facilities that were expanded in San
3030 Antonio and El Paso and newly constructed in Houston, Dallas,
3131 Fort Worth, Waco, and other locations around the state; students
3232 and alumni of Texas' institutions of higher education answered
3333 the call to serve in the Army, Navy, and Marines; and
3434 WHEREAS, Texas minorities and women served with distinction
3535 in an era that often overlooked their contributions; more than
3636 31,000 Texas African Americans served in the Army during the war,
3737 as did a substantial number of Mexican Americans and Native
3838 Americans; Texas women served as military service members and as
3939 civilian nurses, Red Cross volunteers, and communications
4040 specialists; and
4141 WHEREAS, Both public and private organizations in Texas
4242 have preserved the historical landmarks, exhibits, and artifacts
4343 related to the state's prominent role in World War I, including
4444 the Battleship Texas, Hangar 9, and various museum exhibits; and
4545 WHEREAS, Soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice are at the
4646 forefrontofcommemorationsofthewar;allveterans,communities,
4747 and civilians around the state made sacrifices that helped win
4848 the war and ultimately propelled the United States and Texas onto
4949 the world stage; and
5050 WHEREAS, In 2013, the United States, through an act of
5151 Congress and the establishment of the World War I Centennial
5252 Commission, initiated actions to recognize the 100th anniversary
5353 of the nation's many sacrifices during World War I; and
5454 WHEREAS, The Texas World War I Centennial Commemoration
5555 Association has championed the recognition of the role of Texas
5656 and Texans in the Great War; now, therefore, be it
5757 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
5858 Legislature, hereby recognize the commemoration of the
5959 centennial of World War I; and, be it further
6060 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
6161 expression of gratitude to those Texans who served in World War I
6262 and the Texas civilians who worked as part of the war effort and
6363 in appreciation for communities and organizations that seek to
6464 commemorate the centennial of the war through various actions and
6565 initiatives during the period of recognition between April 2017,
6666 the 100th anniversary of the United States' entry into the war,
6767 and June 2019, the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty
6868 of Versailles.
