2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, During the years 1917 to 1919, Texas and Texans |

3 | 3 | | played a prominent role in all aspects of the United States' |

4 | 4 | | involvement in the Great War; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Of the approximately 200,000 Texans who served in |
---|
6 | 6 | | the military, on land, at sea, and in the air, 5,171 made the |
---|
7 | 7 | | ultimate sacrifice for their country during World War I; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Texans served in the Army, Navy, and Marines, and |
---|
9 | 9 | | Texas soldiers formed the Army's 36th and 90th Infantry |
---|
10 | 10 | | Divisions; the state became a primary training location for |
---|
11 | 11 | | numerous National Guard divisions mobilized from other states; |
---|
12 | 12 | | Texas was also an early leader in military aviation, with more |
---|
13 | 13 | | than a dozen Army aviation training and logistics bases |
---|
14 | 14 | | established in the state; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Texans made noteworthy individual heroic |
---|
16 | 16 | | contributions during their military service, and the state |
---|
17 | 17 | | produced numerous Medal of Honor recipients, French Croix de |
---|
18 | 18 | | Guerre recipients, and aviation aces; after World War I, many |
---|
19 | 19 | | Texas veterans went on to make significant contributions in |
---|
20 | 20 | | government, industry, the arts, and the military; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The people of Texas provided essential support to |
---|
22 | 22 | | the war effort by producing needed materials, purchasing war |
---|
23 | 23 | | bonds and stamps, participating in food conservation programs, |
---|
24 | 24 | | and volunteering in civic organizations, such as the Red Cross, |
---|
25 | 25 | | the YMCA, the Jewish Welfare Board, and the Salvation Army; Texas |
---|
26 | 26 | | industry and agriculture provided livestock, oil, cotton, lumber, |
---|
27 | 27 | | shipbuilding, and manufacturing in support of the war effort; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Texas cities, towns, and counties supported |
---|
29 | 29 | | numerous military training facilities that were expanded in San |
---|
30 | 30 | | Antonio and El Paso and newly constructed in Houston, Dallas, |
---|
31 | 31 | | Fort Worth, Waco, and other locations around the state; students |
---|
32 | 32 | | and alumni of Texas' institutions of higher education answered |
---|
33 | 33 | | the call to serve in the Army, Navy, and Marines; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Texas minorities and women served with distinction |
---|
35 | 35 | | in an era that often overlooked their contributions; more than |
---|
36 | 36 | | 31,000 Texas African Americans served in the Army during the war, |
---|
37 | 37 | | as did a substantial number of Mexican Americans and Native |
---|
38 | 38 | | Americans; Texas women served as military service members and as |
---|
39 | 39 | | civilian nurses, Red Cross volunteers, and communications |
---|
40 | 40 | | specialists; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Both public and private organizations in Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | have preserved the historical landmarks, exhibits, and artifacts |
---|
43 | 43 | | related to the state's prominent role in World War I, including |
---|
44 | 44 | | the Battleship Texas, Hangar 9, and various museum exhibits; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice are at the |
---|
46 | 46 | | forefrontofcommemorationsofthewar;allveterans,communities, |
---|
47 | 47 | | and civilians around the state made sacrifices that helped win |
---|
48 | 48 | | the war and ultimately propelled the United States and Texas onto |
---|
49 | 49 | | the world stage; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, In 2013, the United States, through an act of |
---|
51 | 51 | | Congress and the establishment of the World War I Centennial |
---|
52 | 52 | | Commission, initiated actions to recognize the 100th anniversary |
---|
53 | 53 | | of the nation's many sacrifices during World War I; and |
---|
54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, The Texas World War I Centennial Commemoration |
---|
55 | 55 | | Association has championed the recognition of the role of Texas |
---|
56 | 56 | | and Texans in the Great War; now, therefore, be it |
---|
57 | 57 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
58 | 58 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the commemoration of the |
---|
59 | 59 | | centennial of World War I; and, be it further |
---|
60 | 60 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an |
---|
61 | 61 | | expression of gratitude to those Texans who served in World War I |
---|
62 | 62 | | and the Texas civilians who worked as part of the war effort and |
---|
63 | 63 | | in appreciation for communities and organizations that seek to |
---|
64 | 64 | | commemorate the centennial of the war through various actions and |
---|
65 | 65 | | initiatives during the period of recognition between April 2017, |
---|
66 | 66 | | the 100th anniversary of the United States' entry into the war, |
---|
67 | 67 | | and June 2019, the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty |
---|
68 | 68 | | of Versailles. |
