11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 233
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the citizens of Hudspeth County on the occasion of the
44 county's centennial celebration, which is taking place
55 February 16, 2017; and
66 WHEREAS, Hudspeth County is named in honor of State Senator
77 Claude Hudspeth, who introduced the bill in the 35th Legislature
88 that led to the organization of the county on September 4, 1917;
99 largely self-educated, Senator Hudspeth studied law and was
1010 admitted to the bar in 1909; he served in the Texas Senate from
1111 1907 to 1919, and he sponsored numerous bills to benefit the
1212 working men and women of the state; he went on to serve with
1313 distinction for 12 years as a member of the United States House of
1414 Representatives; and
1515 WHEREAS, Hudspeth County covers more than 4,500 square
1616 miles of the vast and scenic Chihuahuan Desert, and residents
1717 take great pleasure in the county's great natural beauty and
1818 friendly, close-knit communities; and
1919 WHEREAS, People have lived in the area since prehistoric
2020 times, and missionaries and soldiers from New Spain visited the
2121 region as early as 1581; in 1849, John "Rip" Ford and Major Robert
2222 Neighbors laid out a trail that would be used by prospectors on
2323 their way to the California gold fields; Fort Quitman was
2424 established in 1858 on the Rio Grande to protect travelers and
2525 mail coaches between San Antonio and El Paso; and
2626 WHEREAS, The country's second transcontinental railway was
2727 completed in 1881 near the present-day county seat, Sierra
2828 Blanca,andhomesteadersbegansettlingintheareaintheearly
2929 20th century; the county later served as a haven for refugees
3030 fleeing the upheaval caused by the Mexican Revolution; and
3131 WHEREAS, Through the years, the county's economy has been
3232 based largely on ranching, farming, and mining; tourism and
3333 outdoor activities attract numerous visitors to the Guadalupe
3434 Mountains National Park and the Sierra Diablo Wildlife
3535 Management Area, which is home to the state's largest population
3636 of free-ranging bighorn sheep; and
3737 WHEREAS, The people of Hudspeth County are confidently
3838 facing the future while continuing to embrace their rich and
3939 colorful past; it is truly fitting that they receive special
4040 recognition as the county celebrates its centennial anniversary;
4141 now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4343 Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Hudspeth County on
4444 their many contributions to the growth and progress of our state
4545 and extend to them best wishes for a memorable centennial
4646 celebration; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4848 the county as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
