2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the citizens of Hudspeth County on the occasion of the |
---|
4 | 4 | | county's centennial celebration, which is taking place |
---|
5 | 5 | | February 16, 2017; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Hudspeth County is named in honor of State Senator |
---|
7 | 7 | | Claude Hudspeth, who introduced the bill in the 35th Legislature |
---|
8 | 8 | | that led to the organization of the county on September 4, 1917; |
---|
9 | 9 | | largely self-educated, Senator Hudspeth studied law and was |
---|
10 | 10 | | admitted to the bar in 1909; he served in the Texas Senate from |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1907 to 1919, and he sponsored numerous bills to benefit the |
---|
12 | 12 | | working men and women of the state; he went on to serve with |
---|
13 | 13 | | distinction for 12 years as a member of the United States House of |
---|
14 | 14 | | Representatives; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Hudspeth County covers more than 4,500 square |
---|
16 | 16 | | miles of the vast and scenic Chihuahuan Desert, and residents |
---|
17 | 17 | | take great pleasure in the county's great natural beauty and |
---|
18 | 18 | | friendly, close-knit communities; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, People have lived in the area since prehistoric |
---|
20 | 20 | | times, and missionaries and soldiers from New Spain visited the |
---|
21 | 21 | | region as early as 1581; in 1849, John "Rip" Ford and Major Robert |
---|
22 | 22 | | Neighbors laid out a trail that would be used by prospectors on |
---|
23 | 23 | | their way to the California gold fields; Fort Quitman was |
---|
24 | 24 | | established in 1858 on the Rio Grande to protect travelers and |
---|
25 | 25 | | mail coaches between San Antonio and El Paso; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The country's second transcontinental railway was |
---|
27 | 27 | | completed in 1881 near the present-day county seat, Sierra |
---|
28 | 28 | | Blanca,andhomesteadersbegansettlingintheareaintheearly |
---|
29 | 29 | | 20th century; the county later served as a haven for refugees |
---|
30 | 30 | | fleeing the upheaval caused by the Mexican Revolution; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, the county's economy has been |
---|
32 | 32 | | based largely on ranching, farming, and mining; tourism and |
---|
33 | 33 | | outdoor activities attract numerous visitors to the Guadalupe |
---|
34 | 34 | | Mountains National Park and the Sierra Diablo Wildlife |
---|
35 | 35 | | Management Area, which is home to the state's largest population |
---|
36 | 36 | | of free-ranging bighorn sheep; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The people of Hudspeth County are confidently |
---|
38 | 38 | | facing the future while continuing to embrace their rich and |
---|
39 | 39 | | colorful past; it is truly fitting that they receive special |
---|
40 | 40 | | recognition as the county celebrates its centennial anniversary; |
---|
41 | 41 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Hudspeth County on |
---|
44 | 44 | | their many contributions to the growth and progress of our state |
---|
45 | 45 | | and extend to them best wishes for a memorable centennial |
---|
46 | 46 | | celebration; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

48 | 48 | | the county as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
