SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 238 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to welcome the visiting delegation from Pearland on the occasion of Pearland Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, The City of Pearland was established in 1893 and named for the fruit trees that were planted to attract land buyers to the area; hurricanes and other forms of harsh weather decimated the orchards in the initial decades of the city's history, however the city began to thrive in 1894 when the Southern Homestead Company built the town's first building, a railroad station depot that is still standing; and WHEREAS, Today, the city boasts a flourishing economy and effective school systems; the local chamber of commerce works diligently to continue the city's course of successful development and helps to keep the citizenry informed on matters that affect the community; and WHEREAS, Residents of Pearland enjoy the benefit of the city's proximity to Houston and to Galveston's attractions, while cherishing the unique charm of their beloved community; Pearland was recognized by the National Civic League in 1999 as an All-America City; and WHEREAS, Pearland is an outstanding city in which to live, work, and raise a family, and citizens can indeed take pride in the place they call home; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby recognize February 22, 2017, as Pearland Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation best wishes for a memorable day in Austin; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
