1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 239
2	2	WHEREAS, Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas, one
3	3	of the nation's oldest law enforcement organizations, are
4	4	gathering in Austin on February 28, 2017, to participate in
5	5	Sheriffs' Association of Texas Day at the Capitol; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The Texas Constitution created the office of
7	7	sheriff in each county of the state; legislation requires that a
8	8	sheriff conserve peace and enforce the criminal laws of the
9	9	state; moreover, the sheriff is responsible for the county jail,
10	10	bail bonds, civil process, and the security of the courts; in
11	11	some smaller counties, the sheriff may also act as the tax
12	12	collector; and
13	13	WHEREAS, The first meeting of this esteemed association
14	14	took place on August 14, 1874; association members adopted their
15	15	preamble calling for sheriffs to assist one another in the execution
16	16	of laws, in the discharge of their duties against criminals, and in
17	17	the protection of the citizens in their respective counties and
18	18	throughout the state; through the years, members of the association
19	19	have continued to support the dictates of this mission; and
20	20	WHEREAS, The office of sheriff is one of the oldest forms of
21	21	law enforcement; sheriffs in our state's 254 counties are elected
22	22	to four-year terms, and each sheriff is a member of the Sheriffs'
23	23	Association of Texas; in addition, more than 2,500 individuals
24	24	are active members of the group, and more than 50,000 individuals
25	25	are associate members; now, therefore, be it
26	26	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
27	27	Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2017, as Sheriffs'
28	28	Association of Texas Day at the Capitol and commend the members
29	29	of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas for their many contributions
30	30	to our state; and, be it further
31	31	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
32	32	association as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
