55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Shelby H. Carter Jr., who died on
77 January 25, 2017, at the age of 85; and
88 WHEREAS, Shelby Carter was born on March 23, 1931, in
99 Brooklyn, New York; he received a scholarship to attend the
1010 McDonogh School, a military academy near Baltimore; it was there
1111 that he met the love of his life and his wife of 63 years, Pat, and
1212 they raised six children together and were blessed with 16
1313 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and
1414 WHEREAS, He earned a degree from The University of Texas at
1515 Austin, where he joined the Navy Reserve Officers' Training Corps
1616 and qualified for Marine Platoon Leaders Class; he went on to
1717 serve with distinction in the United States Marine Corps, and his
1818 duties included time as an aide-de-camp to General Edward
1919 W. Snedeker of the Second Marine Division; and
2020 WHEREAS, After his military service, he began a long and
2121 distinguished career in business and education; he worked for IBM
2222 and Xerox, and his drive and innovative attitude resulted in his
2323 being called one of the country's 10 greatest salespersons; and
2424 WHEREAS, He retired from Xerox as a corporate
2525 vice-president in 1985 and moved to Austin, where he took a
2626 position as an adjunct professor at The University of Texas at
2727 Austin and became a widely respected and highly sought-after
2828 instructor; his many honors included Outstanding Professor in
2929 the Graduate School of Business, the Texas Excellence Teaching
3030 award, and induction into the university's Hall of Fame; and
3131 WHEREAS, He cofounded the pioneering computer networking
3232 firm Synoptics, which became a Fortune 500 company, and he served
3333 as an advisory partner and board member for multiple technology
3434 companies; and
3535 WHEREAS, He and his wife were committed to education, and
3636 they established scholarships at the McDonogh School and
3737 Nazareth College; they also founded the Pat and Shelby Carter
3838 Athletic Center at Saint Michael's Academy and the Pat and Shelby
3939 Carter Endowment for Educational Excellence at The University of
4040 Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business; and
4141 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and determination, he
4242 gave unselfishly to others, and his generous spirit, his wry
4343 sense of humor, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the
4444 fullest will not be forgotten; and
4545 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
4646 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
4747 forever by his family and all who were privileged to share in his
4848 life; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
5050 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5151 family of Shelby H. Carter Jr.; and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5353 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5454 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5555 memory of Shelby Carter.
