4	4	Shelby H. Carter Jr.
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	6	commemorates the life of Shelby H. Carter Jr., who died on
7	7	January 25, 2017, at the age of 85; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Shelby Carter was born on March 23, 1931, in
9	9	Brooklyn, New York; he received a scholarship to attend the
10	10	McDonogh School, a military academy near Baltimore; it was there
11	11	that he met the love of his life and his wife of 63 years, Pat, and
12	12	they raised six children together and were blessed with 16
13	13	grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and
14	14	WHEREAS, He earned a degree from The University of Texas at
15	15	Austin, where he joined the Navy Reserve Officers' Training Corps
16	16	and qualified for Marine Platoon Leaders Class; he went on to
17	17	serve with distinction in the United States Marine Corps, and his
18	18	duties included time as an aide-de-camp to General Edward
19	19	W. Snedeker of the Second Marine Division; and
20	20	WHEREAS, After his military service, he began a long and
21	21	distinguished career in business and education; he worked for IBM
22	22	and Xerox, and his drive and innovative attitude resulted in his
23	23	being called one of the country's 10 greatest salespersons; and
24	24	WHEREAS, He retired from Xerox as a corporate
25	25	vice-president in 1985 and moved to Austin, where he took a
26	26	position as an adjunct professor at The University of Texas at
27	27	Austin and became a widely respected and highly sought-after
28	28	instructor; his many honors included Outstanding Professor in
29	29	the Graduate School of Business, the Texas Excellence Teaching
30	30	award, and induction into the university's Hall of Fame; and
31	31	WHEREAS, He cofounded the pioneering computer networking
32	32	firm Synoptics, which became a Fortune 500 company, and he served
33	33	as an advisory partner and board member for multiple technology
34	34	companies; and
35	35	WHEREAS, He and his wife were committed to education, and
36	36	they established scholarships at the McDonogh School and
37	37	Nazareth College; they also founded the Pat and Shelby Carter
38	38	Athletic Center at Saint Michael's Academy and the Pat and Shelby
39	39	Carter Endowment for Educational Excellence at The University of
40	40	Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business; and
41	41	WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and determination, he
42	42	gave unselfishly to others, and his generous spirit, his wry
43	43	sense of humor, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the
44	44	fullest will not be forgotten; and
45	45	WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
46	46	grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
47	47	forever by his family and all who were privileged to share in his
48	48	life; now, therefore, be it
49	49	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
50	50	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
51	51	family of Shelby H. Carter Jr.; and, be it further
52	52	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
53	53	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
54	54	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
55	55	memory of Shelby Carter.
