44 Betty Baker
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Betty Baker, who died on January 30,
77 2017; and
88 WHEREAS, Betty Baker was born in 1933 in Georgetown to
99 Dillard and Ila Gower; a 1950 graduate of Austin High School, she
1010 attended Southwest Texas State University; and
1111 WHEREAS, She enjoyed a long and productive career serving
1212 the citizens of Austin; she began her time in public service as a
1313 stenographer with the City of Austin, but she was soon promoted
1414 to a position within the city's Planning and Zoning Department,
1515 where she was best known for spearheading the creation of the
1616 Historic Preservation Office; and
1717 WHEREAS, Under her leadership, the office was responsible
1818 for preserving more than 400 landmark structures; she was
1919 dedicated to her work in saving and rehabilitating the city's
2020 Moonlight Towers as well as in highlighting the important
2121 contributions African Americans made to Austin's history; and
2222 WHEREAS, She played an important role in the creation of
2323 the East 6th Street Historic District and the Congress Avenue
2424 Historic District, and after retiring from city service, she
2525 served with distinction as chair of the Planning Commission and
2626 later as chair of the Zoning and Platting Commission; and
2727 WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and fearless
2828 determination, she gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom,
2929 her dedication to public service, and her enthusiasm for living
3030 each day to the fullest will not be forgotten; and
3131 WHEREAS, She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she
3232 leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her
3333 family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3535 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3636 family of Betty Baker; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3939 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4040 memory of Betty Baker.
