5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Betty Baker, who died on January 30, |
---|
7 | 7 | | 2017; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Betty Baker was born in 1933 in Georgetown to |
---|
9 | 9 | | Dillard and Ila Gower; a 1950 graduate of Austin High School, she |
---|
10 | 10 | | attended Southwest Texas State University; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, She enjoyed a long and productive career serving |
---|
12 | 12 | | the citizens of Austin; she began her time in public service as a |
---|
13 | 13 | | stenographer with the City of Austin, but she was soon promoted |
---|
14 | 14 | | to a position within the city's Planning and Zoning Department, |
---|
15 | 15 | | where she was best known for spearheading the creation of the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Historic Preservation Office; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Under her leadership, the office was responsible |
---|
18 | 18 | | for preserving more than 400 landmark structures; she was |
---|
19 | 19 | | dedicated to her work in saving and rehabilitating the city's |
---|
20 | 20 | | Moonlight Towers as well as in highlighting the important |
---|
21 | 21 | | contributions African Americans made to Austin's history; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, She played an important role in the creation of |
---|
23 | 23 | | the East 6th Street Historic District and the Congress Avenue |
---|
24 | 24 | | Historic District, and after retiring from city service, she |
---|
25 | 25 | | served with distinction as chair of the Planning Commission and |
---|
26 | 26 | | later as chair of the Zoning and Platting Commission; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and fearless |
---|
28 | 28 | | determination, she gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, |
---|
29 | 29 | | her dedication to public service, and her enthusiasm for living |
---|
30 | 30 | | each day to the fullest will not be forgotten; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she |
---|
32 | 32 | | leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her |
---|
33 | 33 | | family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
36 | 36 | | family of Betty Baker; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
38 | 38 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
40 | 40 | | memory of Betty Baker. |
