11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 247
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 welcome the citizens of the neighboring communities of Harlingen
44 and San Benito who are visiting Austin on Harlingen-San Benito
55 Day at the Capitol, March 8, 2017; and
66 WHEREAS, Harlingen traces its roots to Lon C. Hill, who
77 proposed the town site be astride the tracks of the Saint Louis,
88 Brownsville, and Mexico Railway; Harlingen was then destined to
99 become a crossroads, and the first train passed through on July 4,
1010 1904; and
1111 WHEREAS, Harlingen's World War II army air field evolved into
1212 Harlingen Air Force Base, and later, into Valley International
1313 Airport, the region's largest airport; additionally, Harlingen's
1414 Free Trade Bridge provides access to Mexico, and its barge port
1515 connects to the Intracoastal Waterway; and
1616 WHEREAS, The area's semitropical climate, natural resources,
1717 and friendly people have long made Harlingen a destination for
1818 travelers, including winter Texans, birders, and other outdoor
1919 enthusiasts; attractions include the Iwo Jima Memorial, the
2020 historic downtown district with its mural and heritage trails,
2121 and an abundance of parks and sports facilities; Harlingen is
2222 currently privileged to have the leadership of Mayor Christopher
2323 H. Boswell; and
2424 WHEREAS, The City of San Benito began to flourish due to
2525 the efforts of such early pioneers as Colonel Sam Robertson;
2626 through the creation of an expansive irrigation system and the
2727 development of a significant railroad system and network, San
2828 Benito contributed greatly to the economic rise of Cameron County
2929 and the Rio Grande Valley; and
3030 WHEREAS, Through the years, San Benito has been an asset to
3131 our state and nation in multiple ways; the city's sons and
3232 daughters have played a significant role in our country's defense
3333 by their service in conflicts around the world; in addition, San
3434 Benito promotes, preserves, and supports the cultural arts and
3535 institutes that generate tourism in Texas; the city is home to
3636 the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the San Benito
3737 History Museum, the Freddy Fender Museum, and the Narciso
3838 Martinez Cultural Arts Center; San Benito currently enjoys the
3939 leadership of Mayor Celeste Sanchez; and
4040 WHEREAS, The residents of Harlingen and San Benito have
4141 developed a regional health care hub that includes the Valley
4242 Baptist Health System, the Harlingen Medical Center, and Muñiz
4343 Rio Grande Pharmacy; and
4444 WHEREAS, Residents of both cities have long understood the
4545 importance of education as a key to the future and have supported
4646 efforts to expand public and private schools; the area's assets
4747 include Texas State Technical College and the Regional Academic
4848 Health Center, which has been an integral part of medical
4949 services and education in the Rio Grande Valley since 1999; and
5050 WHEREAS, The Cities of Harlingen and San Benito are home to
5151 more than 100,000 Texans, and residents proudly embrace the
5252 colorful history of their communities while confidently
5353 anticipating a prosperous future; now, therefore, be it
5454 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
5555 Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Harlingen and San
5656 Benito on their many contributions to the growth and prosperity
5757 of our state and extend to them best wishes for a productive and
5858 rewarding Harlingen-San Benito Day at the Capitol; and, be it further
5959 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
6060 honor of this special occasion.
