| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Zavala County are gathering in |

| 3 | 3 | | Austin on February 21, 2017, to celebrate Zavala County Day at |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the Winter Garden region of South |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Texas, Zavala County covers nearly 1,300 square miles of fertile |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | plains and wild brushland and is bisected by the Nueces River; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the county was created by the First Legislature of Texas in 1846 |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | and named for Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican colonist and signer of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the Texas Declaration of Independence; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The economy is supported by livestock and grain, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | fruit, and vegetable farming; hunting and fishing opportunities |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | abound, and notable communities include Crystal City, La Pryor, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and Batesville; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Crystal City was laid out in 1905 and named for |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the clear waters of a nearby artesian well; by 1908, the town had |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | a post office, a school, and a stop on the Uvalde Railway, and in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | 1928, it was named the county seat; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The city is a hub for farming, ranching, and food |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | processing, with the Del Monte Corporation cannery contributing |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | to the economy of the region; self-styled as the Spinach Capital |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | of the World, the city holds a Spinach Festival that draws tens of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | thousands of visitors every November with such activities as a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | cook-off, a carnival and parade, and musical performances; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Zavala County take great pride in |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | future, and it is indeed fitting to honor their unique |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 21, 2017, as Zavala |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable |
