11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 262
22 WHEREAS, The United States was involved in a conflagration
33 that engulfed the world in which thousands had answered the call
44 to defend America, and 80 of those men called were later known as
55 the Doolittle Raiders; and
66 WHEREAS, The daring and heroic Doolittle Raid consisted of
77 16 land-based B-25 bombers which were launched from the pitching
88 deck of the USS Hornet aircraft carrier on a one-way mission to
99 bomb Tokyo without fighter cover and the crews uncertain if they
1010 would survive; and
1111 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle and his
1212 raiders knew their mission was highly dangerous and risky, but
1313 they proceeded undaunted, knowing what the raid would mean for
1414 the morale of America; and
1515 WHEREAS, The raid served as a demoralizing blow to the
1616 Empire of Japan and served notice that America would strike back
1717 after the horrific attack upon Pearl Harbor; it was widely
1818 celebrated throughout America and would be the subject of
1919 countless newspaper articles, newsreel films, books, movies, and
2020 speeches; and
2121 WHEREAS, Three of the raiders died when forced to ditch
2222 their bomber, and three were executed by their Japanese captors;
2323 one died from the result of torture and mistreatment, and four
2424 were held as prisoners of war until the surrender of Japan over
2525 three years later; now, therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
2727 Legislature,herebyextenditsdeepestandmostprofound
2828 gratitude for the brave actions of the Doolittle Raiders 75 years
2929 ago this April 18, 2017; and, be it further
3030 RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all Texans to commemorate
3131 the Doolittle Raid and encourage public awareness of how the
3232 actions of these 80 warriors changed the world for the better;
3333 and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared and
3535 presented to the last surviving Doolittle Raider, Lieutenant
3636 Colonel Dick Cole, of Comfort, Texas, as an expression of highest
3737 regard for him and his fellow Doolittle Raiders from the
3838 Texas Senate.
