3 | 3 | | that engulfed the world in which thousands had answered the call |

4 | 4 | | to defend America, and 80 of those men called were later known as |

5 | 5 | | the Doolittle Raiders; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The daring and heroic Doolittle Raid consisted of |
---|
7 | 7 | | 16 land-based B-25 bombers which were launched from the pitching |
---|
8 | 8 | | deck of the USS Hornet aircraft carrier on a one-way mission to |
---|
9 | 9 | | bomb Tokyo without fighter cover and the crews uncertain if they |
---|
10 | 10 | | would survive; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle and his |
---|
12 | 12 | | raiders knew their mission was highly dangerous and risky, but |
---|
13 | 13 | | they proceeded undaunted, knowing what the raid would mean for |
---|
14 | 14 | | the morale of America; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The raid served as a demoralizing blow to the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Empire of Japan and served notice that America would strike back |
---|
17 | 17 | | after the horrific attack upon Pearl Harbor; it was widely |
---|
18 | 18 | | celebrated throughout America and would be the subject of |
---|
19 | 19 | | countless newspaper articles, newsreel films, books, movies, and |
---|
20 | 20 | | speeches; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Three of the raiders died when forced to ditch |
---|
22 | 22 | | their bomber, and three were executed by their Japanese captors; |
---|
23 | 23 | | one died from the result of torture and mistreatment, and four |
---|
24 | 24 | | were held as prisoners of war until the surrender of Japan over |
---|
25 | 25 | | three years later; now, therefore, be it |
---|
26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
27 | 27 | | Legislature,herebyextenditsdeepestandmostprofound |

28 | 28 | | gratitude for the brave actions of the Doolittle Raiders 75 years |

29 | 29 | | ago this April 18, 2017; and, be it further |

30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all Texans to commemorate |
