| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Kinney County are gathering in |

| 3 | 3 | | Austin on February 22, 2017, to celebrate Kinney County Day at |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located west of San Antonio in the Rio Grande |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Plains region, Kinney County was created in 1850 and named for |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | early settler and adventurer Henry Lawrence Kinney; the United |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | States Army established Fort Riley, later known as Fort Clark, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | along Las Moras Creek in 1852, and the community of Brackett was |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | formed later that same year; by 1876, the final boundaries of the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | county had been set by the Texas Legislature, and the renamed |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | town of Brackettville was designated as the county seat; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, cattle ranching has dominated |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the economy of Kinney County, and wool and mohair production |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | played an important part in the nation's efforts during World War |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | II; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, tourists are drawn to the county by such |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | attractions as Kickapoo Cavern State Park and Fort Clark |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Springs, a community that provides visitors and residents alike |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | with opportunities for camping, swimming, and tours of the Old |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Guardhouse Museum; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The people of Kinney County are confidently facing |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the future while continuing to embrace their vibrant heritage, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and it is indeed fitting to honor their contributions to the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 22, 2017, as Kinney |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable |
|---|
