11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 272
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the Build a Better Texas Coalition and the Workers Defense
44 Project in observing March 1, 2017, as the Day of the Fallen; and
55 WHEREAS, On the Day of the Fallen, groups are gathering in
66 Austin to honor the men and women who have died in
77 construction-related accidents and to promote workplace safety
88 in the construction industry; and
99 WHEREAS, The Build a Better Texas Coalition consists of
1010 businesses, community and faith-based organizations, and various
1111 individuals who are dedicated to fostering workplace safety; and
1212 WHEREAS, The construction industry plays a significant
1313 role in the Texas economy, with nearly one million Texans working
1414 in the field, and workplace safety has become a serious issue
1515 throughout the state; more construction workers die in Texas due
1616 to work-related accidents than in any other state; there were 78
1717 such deaths confirmed in 2016 alone, and one in every five
1818 construction workers in Texas suffers an injury that requires
1919 medical attention; and
2020 WHEREAS, Since a strong and sustainable construction
2121 industry is essential to the economic prosperity of our state, it
2222 is truly fitting that efforts be made to uphold the highest of
2323 standards in workplace safety in Texas; now, therefore, be it
2424 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
2525 Legislature, hereby encourage Texans across the state to observe
2626 March 1, 2017, as the Day of the Fallen, in memory of the
2727 thousands who have died in construction-related accidents; and,
