2	2	WHEREAS, Proud residents of Rockwall County are gathering
3	3	in Austin February 26-28, 2017, to celebrate Rockwall County Days
4	4	at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Situated on the gently rolling Blackland Prairie
6	6	of North Texas, the region was inhabited by members of the Caddo
7	7	and Cherokee tribes before the first European resident, John
8	8	O. Heath, settled on the East Fork of the Trinity River in 1846;
9	9	Rockwall County was established in 1873, taking its name from an
10	10	underground rock formation; and
11	11	WHEREAS, The smallest county in Texas, yet among the
12	12	fastest growing, Rockwall County today boasts a population of
13	13	approximately 90,000 people who are committed to economic
14	14	development while maintaining their bustling downtowns and
15	15	small-community atmosphere; and
16	16	WHEREAS, The county seat, Rockwall, was named by early
17	17	explorer T. U. Wade, who discovered a large rock wall when
18	18	digging a well in the mid-1800s; dedicated to preserving their
19	19	community's rich heritage and family-friendly environment,
20	20	residents and civic leaders are working hard to keep a small-town
21	21	feel to a vibrant city even as its population continues to grow; and
22	22	WHEREAS, The city of Heath boasts a premier residential
23	23	community located along the picturesque shores of Lake Ray
24	24	Hubbard, and its residents enjoy high property values, low tax
25	25	rates, and exemplary schools; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Looking to the future with a strong chamber of
27	27	commerce that supports local businesses, Royse City, too, is
28	28	makingitaprioritytopreserveitsroots;withalively
29	29	downtown and superior schools, it has truly become an ideal spot
30	30	to call home; and
31	31	WHEREAS, In an area known for its rich blackland soil, the
32	32	town of McLendon-Chisholm dates back to the mid-1800s and is
33	33	partially named for P. A. McLendon, an area landowner, who
34	34	encouraged growth when he built a store and a blacksmith shop
35	35	before the community merged with another to become the inviting
36	36	town it is today; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Mobile City is the county's newest incorporated
38	38	town and its smallest, with nearly 200 residents; additionally,
39	39	its land area of just 0.02 square miles distinguishes it as
40	40	having the highest population density of any municipality in
41	41	Texas; and
42	42	WHEREAS, Rockwall County is an exceptional place to live,
43	43	work, and raise a family, and its citizens may take justifiable
44	44	pride in their community's unique contributions to the story of
45	45	the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
46	46	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
47	47	Legislature, hereby recognize February 26-28, 2017, as Rockwall
48	48	County Days at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
49	49	delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable
50	50	stay in Austin.
