55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of Dimitri Peter Pappas,
77 who died January 24, 2017, at the age of 81; and
88 WHEREAS, Dimitri Pappas was born on August 19, 1935, in
99 Laredo, Texas, to Emma Alicia Martinez and Peter Santiago Pappas,
1010 who was the son of Santiago Pappas, one of the first Greek
1111 immigrants in Laredo; and
1212 WHEREAS, Dimitri Pappas earned a bachelor's degree in
1313 accounting from Texas A&M University, where he was a member of
1414 the Corps of Cadets, and he went on to serve the nation as a
1515 navigator and pilot in the United States Air Force; his military
1616 career included a tour of duty in Vietnam, and he was honored with
1717 the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Bronze Star
1818 Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross; he earned a
1919 master's degree in logistics management during his service, and
2020 he retired from the Air Force with the rank of lieutenant
2121 colonel; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Pappas was respected and admired throughout
2323 the community for his commitment to faith, family, tradition, and
2424 education; he served as a lector at Saint Michael's Catholic
2525 Church, and he and his wife, Judy, both served the church as
2626 eucharistic ministers; and
2727 WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a
2828 man of great distinction, Dimitri Pappas was beloved by many; he
2929 leaves behind memories that will long be cherished by all who
3030 were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3232 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3333 family of Dimitri Peter Pappas: his devoted wife, Judith Mudd
3434 Pappas; his children, Sandra Ann Flanagan and Michael Peter
3535 Pappas; his sister, Sandra Pappas Carabaza; and his two
3636 granddaughters; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3939 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4040 memory of Dimitri Peter Pappas.
