| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the 80th annual Charro Days Fiesta, which is taking |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | place February 19 through 26, 2017; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Charro Days Fiesta began in 1938 as an |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | endeavor by Brownsville business leaders to raise the spirits of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | community members during the distressing times of the Great |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Depression; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Since the first celebration, the binational |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | festival has honored the spirit of the charros, the Mexican |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | cowboys who are considered heroes of the borderlands, and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | festival-goers often dress in the cowboys' traditional costumes; |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the early years of festivities also included horse-drawn parade |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | floats, elegant costume balls, street parties, and fireworks |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | launched with the traditional joyful yell, or grito; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The City of Matamoros has played an integral role |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | in the success of the Charro Days Fiesta; in years past, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | international bridges were opened during the festival so that |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | friends and family from across the border were able to share in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the celebration; today, the sister cities host the Hands Across |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the Bridge ceremony, when the mayors of Matamoros and Brownsville |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | meet to officially open the week of festivities; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The Charro Days Fiesta has honored bicultural |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | traditions and brought communities together in the spirit of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | camaraderie, and the 80th commemoration of this event is indeed |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | cause for celebration; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby commend all who have helped the Charro Days |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Fiesta succeed over the years and extend to them best wishes for a |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | joyous 2017 Charro Days Fiesta; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | memento of this very special event. |
