11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 297
22 WHEREAS, Residents of Fannin County are gathering at the
33 Texas State Capitol on February 28, 2017, to celebrate Fannin
44 County Day, and this occasion provides an opportunity to recognize
55 the rich history and significant accomplishments of this notable
66 part of the Lone Star State; and
77 WHEREAS, The first nonnative settlements in the area that
88 would become Fannin County were established in 1836, the year
99 Texas won its independence from Mexico; when the county was
1010 formed the following year, it took its name from Colonel James
1111 Walker Fannin, Jr., a commander in the Texas revolutionary army,
1212 who had been killed in the Goliad Massacre; Bonham, the county
1313 seat, was named for another hero of the Texas Revolution, James
1414 Bonham, who died at the Alamo and who is now honored with a statue
1515 at the county courthouse; and
1616 WHEREAS, A land of gently rolling hills that are bounded by
1717 the Red River to the north, Fannin County provides good land for
1818 farming and ranching, and those pursuits have been economic
1919 mainstays since the county was established; today, cattle, corn,
2020 wheat, milo, pecans, and hay are key products, and the many acres
2121 of farmland in the county create a tranquil, pastoral landscape;
2222 other industries, such as communications and manufacturing, help
2323 to strengthen and diversify the economy; and
2424 WHEREAS, Bonham, with a population of approximately 10,000,
2525 is the county's largest city; it was the hometown of Sam Rayburn,
2626 the legendary Texas politician who was a member of Congress for
2727 48 years and who still ranks as the longest-serving speaker of
2828 the United States House of Representatives; his legacy is recalled
2929 at the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum and at the Sam Rayburn House
3030 Museum; in addition, Bonham is the site of the Fannin County
3131 Museum of History, the Creative Arts Center, and Fort Inglish
3232 Park, which contains several restored log cabins from the 1830s
3333 and a replica of the stockade erected in the vicinity by early
3434 settlers; and
3535 WHEREAS, The county also offers a number of attractions for
3636 outdoor enthusiasts; Lake Bonham comprises more than 1,000 acres
3737 of water, and is bordered by a golf course and camping facilities;
3838 other lakes are found at Bonham State Park and the Caddo National
3939 Grasslands preserve, which offer opportunities for hiking,
4040 fishing, biking, and other activities; and
4141 WHEREAS, The hardworking residents of Fannin County may
4242 take pride in their area's rich history, productive businesses,
4343 and abundant recreational activities, and it is indeed fitting
4444 to pay tribute to their many contributions to the State of Texas;
4545 now, therefore, be it
4646 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4747 Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2017, as Fannin County
4848 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
4949 sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
