1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 297
2	2	WHEREAS, Residents of Fannin County are gathering at the
3	3	Texas State Capitol on February 28, 2017, to celebrate Fannin
4	4	County Day, and this occasion provides an opportunity to recognize
5	5	the rich history and significant accomplishments of this notable
6	6	part of the Lone Star State; and
7	7	WHEREAS, The first nonnative settlements in the area that
8	8	would become Fannin County were established in 1836, the year
9	9	Texas won its independence from Mexico; when the county was
10	10	formed the following year, it took its name from Colonel James
11	11	Walker Fannin, Jr., a commander in the Texas revolutionary army,
12	12	who had been killed in the Goliad Massacre; Bonham, the county
13	13	seat, was named for another hero of the Texas Revolution, James
14	14	Bonham, who died at the Alamo and who is now honored with a statue
15	15	at the county courthouse; and
16	16	WHEREAS, A land of gently rolling hills that are bounded by
17	17	the Red River to the north, Fannin County provides good land for
18	18	farming and ranching, and those pursuits have been economic
19	19	mainstays since the county was established; today, cattle, corn,
20	20	wheat, milo, pecans, and hay are key products, and the many acres
21	21	of farmland in the county create a tranquil, pastoral landscape;
22	22	other industries, such as communications and manufacturing, help
23	23	to strengthen and diversify the economy; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Bonham, with a population of approximately 10,000,
25	25	is the county's largest city; it was the hometown of Sam Rayburn,
26	26	the legendary Texas politician who was a member of Congress for
27	27	48 years and who still ranks as the longest-serving speaker of
28	28	the United States House of Representatives; his legacy is recalled
29	29	at the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum and at the Sam Rayburn House
30	30	Museum; in addition, Bonham is the site of the Fannin County
31	31	Museum of History, the Creative Arts Center, and Fort Inglish
32	32	Park, which contains several restored log cabins from the 1830s
33	33	and a replica of the stockade erected in the vicinity by early
34	34	settlers; and
35	35	WHEREAS, The county also offers a number of attractions for
36	36	outdoor enthusiasts; Lake Bonham comprises more than 1,000 acres
37	37	of water, and is bordered by a golf course and camping facilities;
38	38	other lakes are found at Bonham State Park and the Caddo National
39	39	Grasslands preserve, which offer opportunities for hiking,
40	40	fishing, biking, and other activities; and
41	41	WHEREAS, The hardworking residents of Fannin County may
42	42	take pride in their area's rich history, productive businesses,
43	43	and abundant recreational activities, and it is indeed fitting
44	44	to pay tribute to their many contributions to the State of Texas;
45	45	now, therefore, be it
46	46	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
47	47	Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2017, as Fannin County
48	48	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
49	49	sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
