1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 298
2	2	WHEREAS, Many proud representatives from the La Joya
3	3	Independent School District are gathering in Austin on February
4	4	27, 2017, in celebration of La Joya Independent School District
5	5	Day at the State Capitol; and
6	6	WHEREAS, A rapidly growing district, La Joya Independent
7	7	School District includes 23 elementary schools, eight middle
8	8	schools, and six high schools, as well as the College and Career
9	9	Center, the Academy of Health Science Professions-STEM, and two
10	10	other academies; the administration has worked tirelessly to
11	11	encourage more young people to pursue higher education, and to
12	12	date, students in dual-enrollment courses have received more
13	13	than 44,000 hours of college credit; in addition, students in
14	14	career and technology programs have earned over 2,000
15	15	certificates; and
16	16	WHEREAS, More than 94 percent of students graduate with a
17	17	recommended or distinguished achievement diploma, and the
18	18	four-year dropout rate is less than three percent; in the most
19	19	recent year, the district received the "Met Standard" rating from
20	20	the Texas Education Agency; it offers a well-rounded curriculum,
21	21	and students have excelled in such areas as band competitions and
22	22	the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair; and
23	23	WHEREAS, The district benefits greatly from the vision and
24	24	expertise of superintendent Dr. Alda Benavides, who was named
25	25	2015 Superintendent of the Year for Region 1 by the Texas
26	26	Association of School Boards and was ranked among the top five
27	27	superintendents in the state; under her leadership, the district
28	28	has invested significantly in technology, science laboratory
29	29	materials, employee and student wellness, and safety; moreover,
30	30	the district added 10 new school buses; teachers, hourly
31	31	employees, and administrators all received raises in consecutive
32	32	years, yet property taxes were not increased; the district has
33	33	received approval for a natatorium, a student resource center,
34	34	and a new employee health clinic building; the school board was
35	35	named Region 1 School Board of the Year and was selected as a Top
36	36	Five Honor Board; and
37	37	WHEREAS, The education of young Texans is a vital
38	38	enterprise, and the La Joya Independent School District has
39	39	demonstrated a strong commitment to providing a challenging and
40	40	supportive learning environment to prepare its graduates for
41	41	future success; now, therefore, be it
42	42	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
43	43	Legislature, hereby recognize February 27, 2017, as La Joya
44	44	Independent School District Day at the State Capitol and extend
45	45	to the visiting delegation sincere best wishes for an informative
46	46	and enjoyable stay in Austin.
