11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 30
22 WHEREAS, Former Houston Astro Jeff Bagwell is being
33 inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of
44 the Class of 2017, and this honor provides recognition for an
55 athlete who is one of the best first basemen in history; and
66 WHEREAS, Born on May 27, 1968, in Boston, Massachusetts,
77 Mr. Bagwell graduated from Xavier High School in Middletown,
88 Connecticut, where he also excelled in soccer and basketball; he
99 chose to pursue baseball at the University of Hartford, and he
1010 twice earned recognition as the Eastern College Athletic
1111 Conference Player of the Year; he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox
1212 in the fourth round of the 1989 Major League Baseball Draft; and
1313 WHEREAS, Mr. Bagwell was a standout player for the AA New
1414 Britain Red Sox, finishing first in the league in hits and
1515 doubles; the Houston Astros wisely requested Mr. Bagwell in a
1616 trade with the Red Sox, initiating one of the most one-sided
1717 trades in baseball history; and
1818 WHEREAS, Making the rare leap from AA to the major leagues,
1919 Mr. Bagwell was named the 1991 National League Rookie of the Year
2020 and was the first Astro to win the award; he was Baseball
2121 America's Rookie of the Year, the Sporting News Rookie of the
2222 Year, and he was a post-season All-Star and on the Topps's Rookie
2323 All-Star Team; and
2424 WHEREAS, His batting power was renowned and
2525 record-breaking; he was the first Houston Astro to win the
2626 National League Most Valuable Player Award and only the fourth
2727 player to win unanimously; and
2828 WHEREAS, Along with teammates such as Craig Biggio, Lance
2929 Berkman, and Derek Bell, he was one of the beloved "Killer Bs"; and
3030 WHEREAS, Mr. Bagwell battled through injuries to return to
3131 the Houston Astros season after season, leading his team by example;
3232 he steered them into the playoffs for multiple seasons; and
3333 WHEREAS, Mr. Bagwell spent his entire career with the
3434 Houston Astros; the first baseman holds Astros records of 449
3535 home runs and 1,529 RBIs; in 15 seasons, he had a .408 on-base
3636 average, a .540 slugging percentage, and he batted .297; and
3737 WHEREAS, Mr. Bagwell remains one of the most consistent
3838 players in baseball history; he has amassed multiple records and
3939 awards for his contributions to baseball, including Baseball
4040 America's Lifetime Achievement Award, along with his pal Craig
4141 Biggio; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4343 Legislature, hereby congratulate Jeff Bagwell on his election to
4444 the National Baseball Hall of Fame and on his many seasons
4545 bringing joy to Houston Astros fans; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Jeff
4747 Bagwell as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
