2	2	WHEREAS, Former Houston Astro Jeff Bagwell is being
3	3	inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of
4	4	the Class of 2017, and this honor provides recognition for an
5	5	athlete who is one of the best first basemen in history; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Born on May 27, 1968, in Boston, Massachusetts,
7	7	Mr. Bagwell graduated from Xavier High School in Middletown,
8	8	Connecticut, where he also excelled in soccer and basketball; he
9	9	chose to pursue baseball at the University of Hartford, and he
10	10	twice earned recognition as the Eastern College Athletic
11	11	Conference Player of the Year; he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox
12	12	in the fourth round of the 1989 Major League Baseball Draft; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Mr. Bagwell was a standout player for the AA New
14	14	Britain Red Sox, finishing first in the league in hits and
15	15	doubles; the Houston Astros wisely requested Mr. Bagwell in a
16	16	trade with the Red Sox, initiating one of the most one-sided
17	17	trades in baseball history; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Making the rare leap from AA to the major leagues,
19	19	Mr. Bagwell was named the 1991 National League Rookie of the Year
20	20	and was the first Astro to win the award; he was Baseball
21	21	America's Rookie of the Year, the Sporting News Rookie of the
22	22	Year, and he was a post-season All-Star and on the Topps's Rookie
23	23	All-Star Team; and
24	24	WHEREAS, His batting power was renowned and
25	25	record-breaking; he was the first Houston Astro to win the
26	26	National League Most Valuable Player Award and only the fourth
27	27	player to win unanimously; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Along with teammates such as Craig Biggio, Lance
29	29	Berkman, and Derek Bell, he was one of the beloved "Killer Bs"; and
30	30	WHEREAS, Mr. Bagwell battled through injuries to return to
31	31	the Houston Astros season after season, leading his team by example;
32	32	he steered them into the playoffs for multiple seasons; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Mr. Bagwell spent his entire career with the
34	34	Houston Astros; the first baseman holds Astros records of 449
35	35	home runs and 1,529 RBIs; in 15 seasons, he had a .408 on-base
36	36	average, a .540 slugging percentage, and he batted .297; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Mr. Bagwell remains one of the most consistent
38	38	players in baseball history; he has amassed multiple records and
39	39	awards for his contributions to baseball, including Baseball
40	40	America's Lifetime Achievement Award, along with his pal Craig
41	41	Biggio; now, therefore, be it
42	42	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
43	43	Legislature, hereby congratulate Jeff Bagwell on his election to
44	44	the National Baseball Hall of Fame and on his many seasons
45	45	bringing joy to Houston Astros fans; and, be it further
46	46	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Jeff
47	47	Bagwell as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
