1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 300
2	2	WHEREAS, La Joya High School is celebrating the 35th
3	3	anniversary of the founding of its Grupo Folklórico Tabasco and
4	4	Mariachi Los Coyotes programs in 2017; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Established in 1982, both Grupo Folklórico
6	6	Tabasco and Mariachi Los Coyotes are dedicated to promoting and
7	7	preserving the folklore and culture of Mexico, Spain, and Latin
8	8	America through music and dance; over the years, the ensembles
9	9	have performed for such dignitaries as Presidents George H. W.
10	10	Bush and Bill Clinton, Governors Mark White and Ann Richards, and
11	11	numerous members of the United States Congress; the recipients of
12	12	state, national, and international recognition, the groups have
13	13	been showcased at the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans and
14	14	have twice been invited to the Nice Carnival in France; today,
15	15	the folklórico group is ably guided by director Cristóbal Rojas,
16	16	while the mariachi ensemble benefits from the leadership of
17	17	director Martin Cantu; and
18	18	WHEREAS, In addition to educating students on the vibrant
19	19	heritage of the Spanish-speaking world, both programs have
20	20	helped increase student retention rates and academic success at
21	21	La Joya High; many of the groups' performers have earned
22	22	individual honors, and most have continued their education at
23	23	colleges and universities that offer cultural scholarships; some
24	24	have gone on to perform professionally; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Over the last three and a half decades, Grupo
26	26	Folklórico Tabasco and Mariachi Los Coyotes have provided
27	27	countless La Joya High students with greater cultural awareness
28	28	and a means of self-expression, and this special occasion
29	29	presents a welcome opportunity to pay tribute to these worthwhile
30	30	programs; now, therefore, be it
31	31	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
32	32	Legislature, hereby commemorate the 35th anniversary of the
33	33	founding of Grupo Folklórico Tabasco and Mariachi Los Coyotes at
34	34	La Joya High School and extend to all those associated with the
35	35	two groups sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
36	36	RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be prepared for the
37	37	ensembles as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
