| 3 | 3 | | visiting Austin on March 1, 2017, in celebration of University of |

| 4 | 4 | | Houston Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Tier One campus is located in an area that is |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | home to a quarter of the state's population and that generates |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | nearly a third of the state's gross product; the student body, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | one of the nation's most diverse, fully reflects the rich |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | cultural tapestry of Houston, and the school is designated as |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian-Serving |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Institution; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Each year, the university awards more than 8,000 |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | degrees in 300 undergraduate and graduate academic programs; it |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | now can boast more than 255,000 alumni; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of chancellor and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | president Renu Khator, the university has received record levels |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | of research funding; it recently embarked on a $1 billion capital |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | campaign, and it has received a $20 million donation for the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | establishment of the McGovern College of the Arts and $20 million |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | for construction of the Fertitta Center Basketball Arena; |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | moreover, it has been recognized as a top institution in spurring |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the upward mobility of low-income students; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The university has been awarded a Phi Beta Kappa |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | chapter; it has a tradition of excellence in athletics as well, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | with a nationally ranked Cougar football team, an NCAA-record 16 |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | national golf titles, and the legendary Phi Slama Jama basketball |

| 27 | 27 | | dynasty; additionally, Olympians Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell |

| 28 | 28 | | attended the school; and |

| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, For nine decades, the University of Houston has |

| 30 | 30 | | provided students with an outstanding education that builds a |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | strong foundation for success, and in so doing, it has |

| 32 | 32 | | contributed significantly to the economic vitality of the Lone |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 1, 2017, as University of |

| 36 | 36 | | Houston Day at the State Capitol and extend to all participants |
