2	2	WHEREAS, Proud residents of the Alamo City are visiting
3	3	Austin on February 28, 2017, to celebrate VIVA San Antonio Day at
4	4	the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The history of San Antonio can be traced back to
6	6	1691, when a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came
7	7	upon a river and named it San Antonio, in honor of Saint Anthony,
8	8	whose feast day was being celebrated; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The city was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio
10	10	Olivares; he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which
11	11	would become etched in the annals of history in 1836 as the Alamo,
12	12	the site where 189 brave individuals held the mission for 13 days
13	13	against an army of some 4,000 Mexican soldiers; the cry "Remember
14	14	the Alamo" became the rallying point of the Texas Revolution;
15	15	today, the Alamo is a shrine and museum and is widely recognized
16	16	as the cradle of Texas liberty; and
17	17	WHEREAS, San Antonio became formally incorporated in 1837,
18	18	when the fledgling Republic of Texas granted the city a charter;
19	19	the community has since retained its sense of history and
20	20	tradition while carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress; it
21	21	continues to serve as a crossroads and a meeting place, where the
22	22	rich cultural influences of Native Americans, Old Mexico, German
23	23	immigrants, the Wild West, African Americans, and the Deep South
24	24	mingle and merge; and
25	25	WHEREAS, The city has a proud military heritage; great
26	26	military figures like Pershing, Stilwell, Krueger, LeMay,
27	27	Chennault, and Eisenhower served at San Antonio military
28	28	institutions, including Fort Sam Houston, the headquarters for
29	29	the United States Army North and United States Army South, and
30	30	Randolph Air Force Base, the home of Air Education and Training
31	31	Command; in addition, San Antonio is the site of Lackland Air
32	32	Force Base, the largest training wing in the United States Air
33	33	Force, and the San Antonio Military Health System, home of all
34	34	United States military medical training; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Recent years have brought remarkable economic
36	36	development to San Antonio as its skilled workforce, excellent
37	37	institutions of public and higher education, and high quality of
38	38	life have attracted important corporate businesses and industries
39	39	to the city; and
40	40	WHEREAS, The city's chambers of commerce serve as leading
41	41	advocates for the business community and are dedicated to
42	42	building and sustaining San Antonio's diverse and prosperous
43	43	economy, particularly in the major local industries of health
44	44	care, manufacturing, aerospace, information technology, and
45	45	cybersecurity; and
46	46	WHEREAS, Millions of visitors a year delight in visiting San
47	47	Antonio; in addition to the Alamo, highlights include La Villita,
48	48	San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio Missions Trail, and the
49	49	famed Paseo del Rio, also known as The Riverwalk; among the other
50	50	attractions that make San Antonio one of the top tourist
51	51	destinations in the country are SeaWorld San Antonio and the Six
52	52	Flags Fiesta Texas theme park as well as the PGA Tour Valero Texas
53	53	Open, the Alamo Bowl, and the five-time world champion San Antonio
54	54	Spurs; and
55	55	WHEREAS, In April 2017, the city will once again celebrate
56	56	Fiesta San Antonio, the biggest 11-day party in the state; first
57	57	held more than 120 years ago, the event was founded by a group of
58	58	women who decorated horse-drawn carriages for a parade in front of
59	59	the Alamo and battled with flower blossoms instead of bullets to
60	60	honor the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto; and
61	61	WHEREAS, San Antonio is truly one of the treasures of the
62	62	Lone Star State, and VIVA San Antonio Day provides a welcome
63	63	opportunity to honor the city and its many fine residents; now,
64	64	therefore, be it
65	65	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
66	66	Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2017, as VIVA San
67	67	Antonio Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
68	68	delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable
69	69	stay in Austin.
