| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Culberson County are gathering |

| 3 | 3 | | in Austin on February 28, 2017, to celebrate Culberson County Day |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated among the rugged, scenic mountains of |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas, the county was originally |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | home to the fierce Mescalero Apaches; in 1859, a cavalry outpost |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | was established at the Van Horn Wells, one of the few reliable |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | sources of water in the area; the last major Native American |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | battle in the State of Texas was fought in the region in 1881, at |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the mouth of Bass Canyon in the Sierra Diablo mountains; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The town of Van Horn was founded in the late |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | 1870s, and in 1881, it became a stop on the Texas and Pacific |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Railway; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Formed from El Paso County in 1911, Culberson |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | County was named for Civil War veteran and former United States |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | congressman David B. Culberson; Van Horn, by now a prosperous |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | shipping point for cattle, became the county seat; in 1953, oil |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | was discovered in the region, and the county later became a major |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | oil producer in the state; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, tourists are drawn to the area by its |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | austere beauty and colorful history; the county is the gateway to |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Guadalupe Mountains National Park, a haven for hikers and nature |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | lovers and home to the highest mountain in Texas, Guadalupe Peak; |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | hunters are drawn to the region by the mule deer, pronghorn |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | antelope, and upland game birds; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with great natural beauty and a rich |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | history, the people of Culberson County may indeed take great |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | pride in their unique contributions to the heritage and culture |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby recognize Culberson County Day at the State |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best wishes |

| 34 | 34 | | for an enjoyable and informative stay in Austin. |
