| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, On March 2, 2017, proud residents of Hunt County |

| 3 | 3 | | are visiting Austin on the occasion of Hunt County Day at the |

| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located in the Blackland Prairie of northeastern |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Texas, Hunt County was first inhabited by the Kiowa; Anglo |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | settlers arrived in 1839, and the county was officially formed |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | from parts of Fannin and Nacogdoches Counties in 1846; with |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Greenville as its seat, the county was named after Memucan Hunt, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | secretary of the navy and minister to Washington under the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Republic of Texas; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, While the county's early economy depended mainly |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | on cotton, life changed dramatically after the Civil War; the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | arrival of the railroad in the mid-1870s was a catalyst for 11 |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | communities that sprang up around train depots, and by the early |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | 20th century, Hunt County was home to the first municipally owned |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | public utilities in Texas and a number of industries centered |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | around the cotton trade, such as cotton-spinning mills, cotton |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | compresses, and a cottonseed oil refinery; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Hunt County has continued to grow; its diverse |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | economy now includes such industries as aircraft electronics and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | plastics distribution, and eight Fortune 500 companies have |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | offices in Greenville; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The county is well served by two institutions of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | higher learning, Texas A&M University--Commerce and the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Greenville Center of Paris Junior College, and it is further |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | enriched by a number of recreational and cultural attractions; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | picturesque Lake Tawakoni State Park is a destination for |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | boating, swimming, camping, and hiking, the Mathews Prairie |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Nature Preserve, a 100-acre tract of native prairie meadow that |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | has never been plowed, is ideal for birders and wildflower |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | enthusiasts, and the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | commemorates the importance of cotton to the region and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | celebrates the life of Hunt County native Audie Murphy, film star |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | and the most decorated American soldier of World War II; and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Hunt County take great pride in |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | their rich history as they work together to build an even |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | brighter future, and it is indeed fitting to honor them and their |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | unique contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | therefore, be it |

| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 2, 2017, as Hunt County Day at |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable stay in Austin. |
