2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | join Texans across the state in celebrating February 28, 2017, as |

4 | 4 | | Grammy Texas Music Advocacy Day; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Texas has a unique musical heritage that is a |
---|
6 | 6 | | source of cultural enrichment for people around the world; from |
---|
7 | 7 | | Texas country music to Tejano music, the state has been the |
---|
8 | 8 | | birthplace of a myriad of distinctive musical styles and home to |
---|
9 | 9 | | musicians from every musical genre; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Live music festivals in Texas generate millions |
---|
11 | 11 | | of dollars in economic activity each year, and more than 160,000 |
---|
12 | 12 | | jobs across the state are related to the music industry; aware of |
---|
13 | 13 | | the important contributions of musicians to the state, the Texas |
---|
14 | 14 | | Legislature created the Texas Music Office to promote and support |
---|
15 | 15 | | the state's culturally significant music industry; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Texas musical artists were nominated for 42 |
---|
17 | 17 | | awards at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards and won 12 of the |
---|
18 | 18 | | prestigious honors; in 1998, the Recording Academy, the |
---|
19 | 19 | | organization responsible for the Grammy Awards, established a |
---|
20 | 20 | | Texas chapter to serve the state's music community; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Among those who have contributed significantly to |
---|
22 | 22 | | the Texas Chapter are Yolanda Adams, an award-winning gospel |
---|
23 | 23 | | artist and the chapter governor from Houston; Kevin Russell, an |
---|
24 | 24 | | Austin Music Hall of Fame Inductee and chapter governor from |
---|
25 | 25 | | Austin; Paul Wall, a Grammy-nominated rap artist and chapter |
---|
26 | 26 | | trustee from Houston; Ricky Anderson, an entertainment attorney |
---|
27 | 27 | | and chapter governor from the Houston area; Sarah Jaffe, a |
---|
28 | 28 | | musician and songwriter and chapter voting member from Denton; |
---|
29 | 29 | | and Theresa Jenkins, the senior executive director of Grammys in |
---|
30 | 30 | | Texas; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Music has been a vital part of the fabric of life |
---|
32 | 32 | | in Texas since the state's founding, and it is truly fitting that |
---|
33 | 33 | | a day be set aside to honor the state's musicians and their many |
---|
34 | 34 | | achievements; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2017, as Grammy Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Music Advocacy Day and call on Texans to value and pay tribute to |
---|
38 | 38 | | the men and women who create music in our state; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
