11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 325
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join Texans across the state in celebrating February 28, 2017, as
44 Grammy Texas Music Advocacy Day; and
55 WHEREAS, Texas has a unique musical heritage that is a
66 source of cultural enrichment for people around the world; from
77 Texas country music to Tejano music, the state has been the
88 birthplace of a myriad of distinctive musical styles and home to
99 musicians from every musical genre; and
1010 WHEREAS, Live music festivals in Texas generate millions
1111 of dollars in economic activity each year, and more than 160,000
1212 jobs across the state are related to the music industry; aware of
1313 the important contributions of musicians to the state, the Texas
1414 Legislature created the Texas Music Office to promote and support
1515 the state's culturally significant music industry; and
1616 WHEREAS, Texas musical artists were nominated for 42
1717 awards at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards and won 12 of the
1818 prestigious honors; in 1998, the Recording Academy, the
1919 organization responsible for the Grammy Awards, established a
2020 Texas chapter to serve the state's music community; and
2121 WHEREAS, Among those who have contributed significantly to
2222 the Texas Chapter are Yolanda Adams, an award-winning gospel
2323 artist and the chapter governor from Houston; Kevin Russell, an
2424 Austin Music Hall of Fame Inductee and chapter governor from
2525 Austin; Paul Wall, a Grammy-nominated rap artist and chapter
2626 trustee from Houston; Ricky Anderson, an entertainment attorney
2727 and chapter governor from the Houston area; Sarah Jaffe, a
2828 musician and songwriter and chapter voting member from Denton;
2929 and Theresa Jenkins, the senior executive director of Grammys in
3030 Texas; and
3131 WHEREAS, Music has been a vital part of the fabric of life
3232 in Texas since the state's founding, and it is truly fitting that
3333 a day be set aside to honor the state's musicians and their many
3434 achievements; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3636 Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2017, as Grammy Texas
3737 Music Advocacy Day and call on Texans to value and pay tribute to
3838 the men and women who create music in our state; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4040 honor of this special occasion.
