11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 327
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the month of March as Multiple System Atrophy Awareness
44 Month in Texas; and
55 WHEREAS, Multiple system atrophy is a progressive and
66 fatal neurological disease that is known to affect approximately
77 15,000 patients in the United States; as many as 35,000 more
88 citizens suffer the condition without accurate diagnoses; and
99 WHEREAS, In the course of a few years, patients with
1010 multiple system atrophy lose the ability to walk, talk, chew,
1111 swallow, and eventually, the ability to breathe; there are no
1212 specific risk factors or known causes for the disease, and there
1313 is currently no known cure; and
1414 WHEREAS, A lack of awareness about multiple system atrophy
1515 has hindered research and the ability of researchers to attain
1616 funding for their work; public support and greater awareness can
1717 aid in the discovery of the causes and a possible cure for this
1818 devastating neurological disease and could help make a difference
1919 in the lives of thousands of Americans; now, therefore, be it
2020 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
2121 Legislature, hereby recognize the month of March as Multiple
2222 System Atrophy Awareness Month in Texas and encourage citizens
2323 across the state to help raise awareness of this neurodegenerative
2424 disorder; and, be it further
2525 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
2626 memento of this important month.
