2	2	WHEREAS, Proud residents of Grand Prairie are gathering in
3	3	Austin on March 1, 2017, to celebrate Grand Prairie Day at the
4	4	State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Founded during the Civil War and originally known
6	6	as Deckman, the city was renamed Grand Prairie in the 1870s, and the
7	7	Texas and Pacific Railway was built to the site in 1876; by 1890,
8	8	the community boasted a public school, a steam gristmill-cotton
9	9	gin, a broom factory, and a wagon factory; in 1928, Hensley Field
10	10	was built just two miles east of Grand Prairie, and the field
11	11	became the hub for area army operations; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Grand Prairie experienced a substantial boom
13	13	during World War II, when a military flight training center and
14	14	an aircraft production factory were established nearby, bringing
15	15	the city's population from 1,595 to approximately 18,000; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Today, Grand Prairie continues to grow, and the
17	17	community has been nationally ranked by WalletHub as the 13th
18	18	best city for families and the 30th best city for jobs, and Forbes
19	19	named it one of the best places to retire in the United States;
20	20	furthermore, crime has dropped 37 percent since 2010, and
21	21	according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Texas
22	22	Department of Public Safety, Grand Prairie is the eighth safest
23	23	major city in Texas with a population of more than 100,000; the
24	24	Grand Prairie Police Department earned a White House Champions of
25	25	Change award for its Youth Boxing Program in 2015, and the Grand
26	26	Prairie Fire Department has achieved the coveted ISO 1 rating and
27	27	was awarded the American Heart Association's Gold Standard for
28	28	EMS service; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Grand Prairie appeals to visitors and residents
30	30	alike who enjoy such attractions as Lone Star Park, Verizon
31	31	Theatre, and Uptown Theater, as well as popular annual events
32	32	including the Prairie Dog Chili Cookoff, the Prairie Lights
33	33	Christmas display, and the National Championship Indian Pow Wow;
34	34	moreover, there are ample opportunities for recreation at scenic
35	35	Joe Pool Lake, Mountain Creek Lake, Lynn Creek Park, and Loyd
36	36	Park, and the city has begun construction on the Epic life
37	37	center, which will include an indoor water park and an
38	38	all-accessible playground; and
39	39	WHEREAS, Grand Prairie's excellent location and numerous
40	40	amenities make it an ideal community in which to live and work,
41	41	and its citizens may indeed take great pride in their
42	42	contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
44	44	Legislature, hereby recognize March 1, 2017, as Grand Prairie Day
45	45	at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
46	46	sincere best wishes for an enjoyable day in Austin.
