2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | join Texans across the state in celebrating the 181st anniversary |
---|
4 | 4 | | of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on |
---|
5 | 5 | | March 2, 2017; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, After several years of rising tensions between |
---|
7 | 7 | | the people of Texas and the government of Mexico, a convention of |
---|
8 | 8 | | delegates from communities across Texas was called to gather in |
---|
9 | 9 | | the town of Washington on March 1, 1836; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, On the first day of the convention, George |
---|
11 | 11 | | C. Childress introduced a resolution calling for the drafting of |
---|
12 | 12 | | a declaration of independence from Mexico; the measure was |
---|
13 | 13 | | approved, and Mr. Childress was named chair of the drafting |
---|
14 | 14 | | committee; the next day, the committee produced a document |
---|
15 | 15 | | patterned on the United States Declaration of Independence, and |
---|
16 | 16 | | it was unanimously adopted less than one hour after its initial |
---|
17 | 17 | | reading; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The convention went on to name Sam Houston as |
---|
19 | 19 | | commanding general of the Texas army, adopt a constitution for |
---|
20 | 20 | | the Republic of Texas, and elect an interim government; chosen to |
---|
21 | 21 | | serve in the new government were David G. Burnet, president, |
---|
22 | 22 | | Lorenzo de Zavala, vice president, Samuel P. Carson, secretary of |
---|
23 | 23 | | state, Thomas J. Rusk, secretary of war, Robert Potter, secretary |
---|
24 | 24 | | of the navy, Bailey Hardeman, secretary of the treasury, and |
---|
25 | 25 | | David Thomas, attorney general; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, On March 15, news reached the convention of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | falloftheAlamo,andtwodayslater, reportsthattheMexican |
---|
28 | 28 | | army was within 60 miles of Washington caused the convention to |
---|
29 | 29 | | adjourn; this setback was reversed less than a month later when |
---|
30 | 30 | | the Mexican army was routed at the Battle of San Jacinto and Texas |
---|
31 | 31 | | independence became a reality; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Texas remained an independent republic until |
---|
33 | 33 | | December 29, 1845, when it entered the United States as the 28th |
---|
34 | 34 | | state; its time as an independent nation constitutes a remarkable |
---|
35 | 35 | | period in the state's history and continues to engender a sense |
---|
36 | 36 | | of pride and identity among its citizens; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 181st anniversary of the |
---|
39 | 39 | | adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence and extend to |
---|
40 | 40 | | Texans everywhere best wishes for a memorable Texas Independence |
---|
41 | 41 | | Day; and, be it further |

42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
