11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 339
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join Texans across the state in celebrating the 181st anniversary
44 of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on
55 March 2, 2017; and
66 WHEREAS, After several years of rising tensions between
77 the people of Texas and the government of Mexico, a convention of
88 delegates from communities across Texas was called to gather in
99 the town of Washington on March 1, 1836; and
1010 WHEREAS, On the first day of the convention, George
1111 C. Childress introduced a resolution calling for the drafting of
1212 a declaration of independence from Mexico; the measure was
1313 approved, and Mr. Childress was named chair of the drafting
1414 committee; the next day, the committee produced a document
1515 patterned on the United States Declaration of Independence, and
1616 it was unanimously adopted less than one hour after its initial
1717 reading; and
1818 WHEREAS, The convention went on to name Sam Houston as
1919 commanding general of the Texas army, adopt a constitution for
2020 the Republic of Texas, and elect an interim government; chosen to
2121 serve in the new government were David G. Burnet, president,
2222 Lorenzo de Zavala, vice president, Samuel P. Carson, secretary of
2323 state, Thomas J. Rusk, secretary of war, Robert Potter, secretary
2424 of the navy, Bailey Hardeman, secretary of the treasury, and
2525 David Thomas, attorney general; and
2626 WHEREAS, On March 15, news reached the convention of the
2727 falloftheAlamo,andtwodayslater, reportsthattheMexican
2828 army was within 60 miles of Washington caused the convention to
2929 adjourn; this setback was reversed less than a month later when
3030 the Mexican army was routed at the Battle of San Jacinto and Texas
3131 independence became a reality; and
3232 WHEREAS, Texas remained an independent republic until
3333 December 29, 1845, when it entered the United States as the 28th
3434 state; its time as an independent nation constitutes a remarkable
3535 period in the state's history and continues to engender a sense
3636 of pride and identity among its citizens; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3838 Legislature, hereby commemorate the 181st anniversary of the
3939 adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence and extend to
4040 Texans everywhere best wishes for a memorable Texas Independence
4141 Day; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4343 honor of this special occasion.
