1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 344
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize the 36th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National
4	4	Guard on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The 36th Infantry Division was established on
6	6	July 18, 1917; composed of National Guard soldiers from Texas and
7	7	Oklahoma, the unit was deployed to Europe during World War I and
8	8	fought in the pivotal Meuse-Argonne Offensive; and
9	9	WHEREAS, In World War II, the 36th Infantry Division took
10	10	part in several of the crucial battles that shaped the outcome of
11	11	the war; the unit participated in amphibious landings and was
12	12	instrumental in securing several regions in France as well as
13	13	cities across the Italian peninsula; it was responsible for the
14	14	capture of Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, commander of German
15	15	armed forces on the Western Front; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Since 2003, the 36th Infantry Division has played a
17	17	vital role in fighting terrorism during multiple deployments to
18	18	Iraq and Afghanistan; in 2016, while stationed in southern
19	19	Afghanistan, it became the first National Guard division to provide
20	20	command and control of a combat region in Afghanistan; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Over the course of its history, the 36th Infantry
22	22	Division has earned 12 Presidential Unit Citations; 80 of its
23	23	soldiers have received the Distinguished Service Cross, and 14
24	24	have received the Medal of Honor; it is truly fitting that this
25	25	exceptional division receive special recognition; now,
26	26	therefore, be it
27	27	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
28	28	Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the storied history of the
29	29	36th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National Guard and
30	30	extend to its officers and soldiers best wishes for a memorable
31	31	100th anniversary celebration; and, be it further
32	32	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
33	33	this esteemed unit as an expression of highest regard from the
34	34	Texas Senate.
