11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 345
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the Harris County Historical Commission and the citizens of
44 Houston in celebrating the dedication of an Official Texas
55 Historical Marker in honor of James Sherwood Lucas and his son,
66 Alfred T. Lucas; and
77 WHEREAS, James Lucas immigrated to the United States from
88 Liverpool, England, with his wife and four children, and by 1873,
99 the family had settled in Houston; over the next 18 years, Mr.
1010 Lucas built a lasting testament to his talents as a brick mason
1111 and contractor, as seen in the brick work of the 1883 Preston
1212 Street Bridge and the 1884 Houston Cotton Exchange Building; and
1313 WHEREAS, By the age of 16, Alfred Lucas was working as an
1414 apprentice to his father, and after James Lucas's death, Alfred
1515 continued the family's contracting business; Alfred's many
1616 accomplishments included working with Eugene T. Heiner on the
1717 1896 Harris County Jail and Criminal Court Building and the 1899
1818 Lavaca County Courthouse; in addition, while working with John
1919 Stadler, he built three private homes and 10 professional
2020 buildings, including the Houston Light Armory, the Henke and
2121 Company Store, the Magnolia and American Breweries, and the
2222 Houston Waterworks pump house; and
2323 WHEREAS, Alfred Lucas helped build several of the city's
2424 famed cultural institutions, such as the 1895 City Auditorium;
2525 his company, Lucas Brick Works, paved many of the streets in
2626 Houston with bricks made at the company's yard on Buffalo Bayou
2727 near Shepherd and San Felipe; and
2828 WHEREAS, James and Alfred Lucas, two generations of
2929 talented brick masons, left a legacy of craftsmanship that aided
3030 in the urbanization and development of Houston, and it is truly
3131 fitting that a historical marker be dedicated in their honor;
3232 now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3434 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the contributions of James
3535 Sherwood Lucas and Alfred T. Lucas to the City of Houston and
3636 extend to the Harris County Historical Commission best wishes for
3737 a memorable Official Texas Historical Marker dedication
3838 ceremony; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4040 honor of this special occasion.
