| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Southwestern Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Incorporated, on the occasion of its 76th Regional Conference, |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | which is being held March 17, 2017; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Southwestern Region was organized in 1940 |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | under the leadership of Mary Scales Greenwood, who served as |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | regional director for eight years and successfully organized |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | multiple chapters in the region; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, During its early days, the Southwestern Region |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | drew on the strength and experience of the local Alpha Lambda |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and Gamma Sigma Chapters of the sorority, which had been |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | founded in 1928 and had already been promoting the sorority's |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | values of greater womanhood, scholarship, community service, and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | leadership; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, the Southwestern Region has |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | played an important role in the national sorority's growth, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | including the creation of its poodle mascot designed by past |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | regional director Quindonnell Robertson; it participates in such |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | activities as the Mwanamugimu Essay Contest and the Program for |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Africa, and its community service program Project Reassurance |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | has provided health education, support, and nurturing for |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | countless expectant teen mothers and special needs families; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Southwestern Region serves communities |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | across Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas, and it is truly |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Southwestern Region of Sigma |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, on its commitment to service |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | and extend to its members best wishes for a rewarding 76th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Regional Conference; and, be it further |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 33 | 33 | | this outstanding organization as an expression of esteem from the |
|---|
