11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 36
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join Texans across the state in celebrating January 24, 2017, as
44 Oyster Day; and
55 WHEREAS, Oysters are among the wide variety of mollusks
66 found in the estuarine waters of the Texas Gulf Coast; they
77 typically grow as consolidated reefs that provide habitat for
88 more than 300 marine aquatic species; and
99 WHEREAS, Oysters function as the lungs of our coastal
1010 systems and play an important role in maintaining good water
1111 quality in the state's bays and estuaries; each oyster is a small
1212 filtering system and is able to pump 50 gallons of water through
1313 its body every day to remove bacteria, sediments, and even toxins
1414 from oil spills; oyster reefs stabilize ocean shorelines and make
1515 them less susceptible to damage from hurricanes and strong
1616 storms; and
1717 WHEREAS, A valuable source of food, oysters provide high
1818 levels of omega-3 fatty acids and zinc; they support a robust
1919 commercial fishing industry in Matagorda, Galveston, and San
2020 Antonio Bays; the Texas oyster industry has a $50 million impact
2121 on the state's economy and provides roughly 15 percent of the
2222 nation's total harvest; and
2323 WHEREAS, Oysters serve as one of Texas' prized natural
2424 resources, and it is fitting that a day be set aside to recognize
2525 the essential ecological and economic roles oysters play in our
2626 state; now, therefore, be it
2727 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
2828 Legislature, hereby proclaim January 24, 2017, as Oyster Day; and,
2929 be it further
3030 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor
3131 of this special occasion.
