| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of the late Reverend S. A. Pleasants, who |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | died April 5, 1953; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, S. A. Pleasants was born in 1879 in Cuero, where |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | he attended high school, and he was later a student at Guadalupe |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | College; he married Pansy O. Le Grendne in 1913, and they were |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | blessed with a daughter and two grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The Reverend Pleasants served as pastor of Sweet |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Home Baptist Church in Seguin, Mount Zion Baptist Church in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Edgar, and Macedonia Baptist Church in Cuero before assuming the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | pulpit of Saint John Baptist Church in Houston in 1925; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Under his leadership, Saint John Baptist Church |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | increased its membership from 280 to more than 8,000, retired its |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | outstanding debt, and constructed a magnificent new sanctuary |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and parsonage; he was influential in such organizations as the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | National Baptist Convention and the Houston Baptist Ministerial |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Alliance and was a pioneer in religious radio broadcasting; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | who gave unselfishly to others, and he was one of the country's |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | leading religious figures; his commitment to living each day |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | according to the tenets of his faith was an inspiration to all who |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | were privileged to know him and to those who were fortunate to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Reverend S. A. Pleasants; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in his |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | honor and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | memory of the Reverend S. A. Pleasants. |
