| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | citizens of Horseshoe Bay in commemorating the life of Texas |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Ranger Stanley Keith Guffey, who died while serving in the line |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | of duty in 1987; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Three decades ago, Texas Rangers Stanley Guffey |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and John Aycock volunteered to hide in the back of a vehicle that |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | was being provided to kidnapper Brent Beeler as part of a ransom |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | negotiation; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Brent Beeler, a wanted parolee from Houston, had |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | barricaded himself inside a house, and he was holding captive |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Kara Leigh-Ann Whitehead, the two-year-old daughter of local |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | ranchers Bill and Leigh Whitehead, and the housekeeper, Denise |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Johnson; after taking the life of Denise Johnson, the kidnapper |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | had demanded a vehicle and $30,000; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Upon entering the car provided by law enforcement |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | and encountering the Texas Rangers in the vehicle, Brent Beeler |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | fired his weapon, and Ranger Guffey was mortally wounded; Ranger |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Aycock shot and killed the kidnapper, and Kara was removed from |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | harm's way and returned to her family; both Texas Rangers were |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | honored with a Medal of Valor for their courageous actions; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Although it has been 30 years since Ranger Guffey |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | made the ultimate sacrifice, he is still remembered for his valor |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and selflessness and for helping to save the life of a precious |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | child; as a tribute to his life and sacrifice, the Horseshoe Bay |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | community gathered for a memorial service in his honor on January |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | 21, 2017; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |

| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Ranger Stanley Keith Guffey; and, be it further |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in his |
