| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize members of the Howard Payne University Moot Court team, |

| 4 | 4 | | who won several awards at the American Moot Court Association |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | 2017 National Championship Tournament on January 6 and 7; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Moot Court tournament is a competition during |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | which students from across the nation prepare and argue cases in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | front of judges in an environment that is designed to simulate |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | presenting arguments before the United States Supreme Court; the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 2017 tournament took place at the Stetson University College of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Law in Gulfport, Florida; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Two teams from Howard Payne University qualified |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | to compete in the national tournament; Caitlin Wood and Jackson |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Spencer qualified by advancing to the quarterfinals at the Texas |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | A&M University School of Law Regional Tournament, and Rebeca |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Puente and Isaac Sommers qualified at the same regional |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | tournament by beating the United States Air Force Academy in the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | final round; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Isaac Sommers was named fifth overall speaker |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | among the 786 competitors at the national event, and the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Puente-Sommers team advanced to outrounds, where they placed in |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the top 16 of 80 teams; in a competition of written arguments |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | submitted prior to the tournament, two Howard Payne University |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | teams won awards for petitioner briefs; the team of Bailey Myler |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and Justin Harris placed sixth, and the Puente-Sommers team |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | placed seventh; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, These distinguished law students worked |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | tirelessly in preparation for this national competition; they |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | have proven their ability to apply complex case law to difficult |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | legal scenarios, and they can indeed take pride in their |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | outstanding accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend the winning team members from Howard |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Payne University for their exceptional performances at the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | American Moot Court Association 2017 National Championship |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Tournament and extend to them best wishes for the future; and, be |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | it further |

| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
